DLA high rate mobility

I'm having a wobble here. Ds (7) was awarded high rate care, low rate mobility till age 12 when I applied over a year ago. I am sure that he qualifies for high under smi and possibly under vuw as his behaviour is so extreme and unpredictable. I didn't argue at the time as I was so happy to get a decent length of award. School are writing a supporting letter for me to apply again for HRM but I'm scared of losing some of the care rate. We have done 3 previous applications and HRC has been awarded each time so maybe I am overthinking. What would you do in my position?

You dont have to complete the full DLA form if you are just questioning mobility. Ring them and explain the situation and you will get a change of circumstance form. There is a question which asks has Care remained unchanged. We ticked no and then just had to complete the mobility section. Search ‘CONTACT - applying for HRC for children with learning disabilities and autism spectrum disorder.’

I'm just about to do the same thing. Applying under vuw. I'm confident we won't lose anything as lots of updated evidence for both still. Maybe we could keep in touch in here 🙂

As well as Contact’s booklet, this document shows the criteria and flowchart DWP use for SMI and VUW.

I have the flowcharts and believe he qualifies under both routes. For context school are taking up to 2 hours to get him into his classroom, if they manage at all. I am struggling to get him on the bus and they are struggling to get him on and off the bus at their end. I can't get him out of the house at all without bribery at the moment. His anxiety is absolutely through the roof and he is refusing activities he usually loves.

He has always been a very anxious child but it seems to be getting worse. He is escaping his disability buggy and I am waiting for a new one from wheelchair services but often he refuses to get in that anyway. He is 30kg, so not exactly easy to lift. He also has violent outbursts and often bites, nips or kicks if you try to pick him up. I am really struggling with him.

With smi I am a bit worried about the severe impairment of intelligence part. He can recognise numbers, letters and colours etc but is non verbal, not toilet trained and cannot safely function day to day. He needs to be on reins or in buggy as he gets distressed and runs off. He has violent outbursts, eats non food items and has had numerous hospitalisations for putting things in nose and ear. I have heard of people being refused under smi because their child can do a puzzle 😳

Hi, my Son sounds exactly the same he has been on HRC and LRM since he was 5, he is now 6 and loads worse. I put in a COC in Jan took them 19 weeks to tell me he isn’t eligible for HRM because his refusals and meltdowns etc are his own choice! How disgusting of an answer to a claim for a disabled child! So I spoke to my Son’s team of Drs and they have each wrote a statement directly to DLA for a Mandatory Reconsideration and to award him HRM as he has nuerodevelopmental needs due to Autism and ADHD. They received all of this yesterday so just waiting now and can update on our outcome. But I definitely advise to get statements from health professionals directly speaking to the DLA. And keep fighting as our little ones are entitled to it.

Mum2Two91 · 01/07/2022 09:26

Hi, just checking in to see if you have done a COC? They refused our COC said my Son’s refusals are his own choice! Literally had me fuming but also made my Son’s Paediatrician angry too and he wrote us a statement with all his needs and he personally stated that our Son needs a car to get him out due to all his difficulties etc.

Mum2Two91 · 01/07/2022 09:26

So we have sent that in with our Mandatory Reconsideration

Shakeitshakeitbaby · 01/07/2022 11:48

We haven't done a coc yet. Our claim is in the process of being moved over to Scotland for scottish child payment so will do a coc once it is moved. The Scottish form seems much more geared up to take into account hidden disabilities.

Good luck with your MR. Everything always seems to be such a fight. ☹️

@Shakeitshakeitbaby hi was wondering how you got on with mobility part, I've just sent ds as he's just turned 5.

MommaG78 · 18/04/2024 09:34

Do you have an update on how you got on? My situation is exactly the same and thinking of putting in coc too

Tol85 · 18/04/2024 22:41

Hi, my ds was awarded him, we in scotland thou and the form was soo much easier to fill in than the dwp one.

Tol85 · 18/04/2024 22:41

*Hrm

MommaG78 · 19/04/2024 08:11

That's brilliant so pleased for you. I'm thinking of putting in a coc as my son meets the criteria under smi and vuw.

Did you put it in? I sent mine in March , not sure what they will say x

MommaG78 · 24/04/2024 08:29

I'm waiting for the coc forms to come. My son has a long award of hrc and lrm but I think he's entitled to hrm

Accbabymom1994 · 24/04/2024 12:21

I didn't fill my forms in properly so I was awarded mrc and no mobility. His teachers were saying his needs are greater and because I've been in denial of his condition, I tried to just ignore it . But yh we have tried again so let's see x

MommaG78 · 24/04/2024 16:32

Hope you get the award your child is entitled to.
