Questions a SENco can ask?

School have picked up on pretty severe attachment issues my child has to me amongst other things. He hasn't suffered any trauma other than the fact his dad left when he was 18 months old, though before this he wasn't really around much anyway.
School have asked to try and address his absent dad with my child. I actually don't mind this as I really need to understand now why my son has developed such an overwhelming attachment to me. But I didn't think it was the sort of thing the senco should be asking him? I know CAMHS do, as I've already had the conversation with them requesting my permission but I was wondering if school should be asking him these sorts of questions?

Of course schools can ask when it’s contributing to DS’s SEMH needs. Otherwise how are they supposed to appropriately support DS?

Would they be asking him questions (and for what reason?) or are they offering emotional support eg ELSA? If the latter I would take it, it's offered to all sort of kids who have emotional needs from social skills and anxiety to divorce to bereavement.

SENCo's role is to get his needs met in school, but they are not qualified to diagnose. Has your son been seen by a suitable professional to identify these attachment issues? If not I wonder if it's worth speaking to GP, assuming there is a ridiculous waiting list for CAMHS. I feel for SENCos, it's an impossible job trying to meet needs with very limited access to suitable professionals and no money. Ed Psychs' time is like gold dust. But SENCos are also not mental health professionals. ELSA at school (often an empathic TA with extra training in emotional literacy) can be a low cost, quick access source of help though.

I've not had the best time with school. Following events I won't go into, they are all over everything now. Which is about time! My child is under service's CAMHS, SALT, OT.
They already have therapy in school.

I don't mind. I just I hope it doesn't confuse him even more. He barely talks about dad as he has never really known him. I just remember CAMHS wanting to do the same and know they are the people who diagnose.

But the SENCO isn’t trying to diagnose, they are trying to support.
