PGL and autistic children

Hello. My son is in y5 currently, he’s autistic with an ehcp and 25.5 hours of 1:1 a week. He’s doing ok academically and is a great boy, but is not really functioning at the same social level as his peers. He’s been in the same school since reception and considers a few of the kids his ‘best friends’ but while they are nice to him no one really seeks him out to play with or chat with; he’s pretty much an onlooker socially from what I can tell. He has a very restricted diet and needs super regulated routines at home to be able to function. He’s also never been on a sleepover/had a night away from us, and we’ve never used babysitters and don’t have any local friends or family who can look after him/have him overnight.

school have asked us to commit to Y6 PGL by the end of this week, and while I think it could potentially be great for him, I am very unsure for all of the above reasons. Does anyone else have any experience of sending autistic children on PGL trips? The centre they’ll be going to is Liddington.

DS3 (autistic, with full time 1:1 in EHCP) has enjoyed similar school trips and scout camps. School/scouts have made reasonable adjustments for him and he still received 1:1.

Thankyou, that’s encouraging. Does your DS have any issues around food, and if so, was this one of the things accommodated for?

DS3 has EDNOS and some allergies. For meals some adjustments were made but we also sent some food to top up meals and for snacks - DS3 needs 3 meals and 3 snacks a day. Scouts are even more accommodating with meal adjustments and we just need to send snacks.

He has overnight tube feeds too, partially related to a medical condition and partially related to his EDNOS. For some trips we have been allowed to stop them while he’s away but for ones where they have been needed his 1:1 is trained for them.

Thanks so much - glad to hear your DS has had a positive PGL experience.
