Hi, new here but not new to special needs.

My son Charlie is 10 (yr 6) and goes to a special school. he has moderate learning difficulties (nominally severe but I don't think so) and ASD/aspergers, and hypotonia. He is social in his own way but tends to off load his obsessions on people instead of talking! His obsessions are DR Who and Andrew Lloyd Webber musicals!! Can't get his pants on the right way but can sing most musicals end to end!

I work with young people (teens) with very severe ASD and very challenging behaviour and severe learning diffs at the same school. Love my job though could do without the beatings, and am passionate about PECS!

Oh I also have 3 other children... aged 13, 14 and 15 who are typcical teens and driving me NUTS

Can relate to the singing obsession...at least your son ain't into horrid horrid 'Pop Party'/ 'Pop Hits'/ 'Pop Junior' type songs...I wake up at night to hear 'umbrella ella ella' and 'who let the dogs out? Woof woof woof woof' because his school plays them at aerobics sessions in the morning and he became obsessed and wanted them for Christmas...now he sings them ALL the time, including night time toilet visits, of which there are many!

Hi anyway!

Hi Charliesmomuk.

Your DS sounds fun.

My DS is 4 and I suspect ASD/AS.

One current obsession/strict part of routine is to is to dance and bounce wildly (altough strangely in rhythm) to All That Jazz from Chicago. Has to do it every morning on our bed whilst I get dressed.

Welcome charliesmom! I'm loving these musical theatre boys My own DD3's tunes of choice are more r n' b/rap. She does one of her 3 dance steps to rubbish off MTV, although also tolerates all the songs off Balamory!
Can you imagine all our children in a room together??

I'll send ds1 in then. He wont sing but will play the William Tell overture on his piano until you want to break his fingers. Does it hours on end.
But he can play most things. Having ASD is great for obsessive practicing
It will be a cacophony!

yurt1 · 12/01/2008 09:39

ds1 (severely autistic, non-verbal) loves musicals. He sings Close Every Door to Me beautifully.

needmorecoffee · 12/01/2008 09:45

ds1 is a bit of a voice critic. He used to scream when people sang but now he comments on their pitch. Can't bear anything off-key, it sends him bananas.
His 'ear' is amazing. Must be an ASD thing but I'm glad he's stopped belting those who sing out of key. It was very embaressing, especially having to tell someone the reason for his meltdown 'err....you can't sing....errr....'

sphil · 12/01/2008 09:48

DS2 can't sing at all, but loves musicals too - especially Chitty Chitty Bang Bang ('Bang Chitty').

yurt1 · 12/01/2008 10:38

needmorecoffee ds1 is the same. Sometimes someone sings and he just shouts at them until they stop. I remember a SALT working with him (private of course before you wonder how we got hands on SALT!)coming upstairs afterwards saying 'do you realise your son has perfect pitch?' I said yes- and he'd had it since his regression at 15 months!

hello and welcome.
DS used to put is hand over my mouth and shout "no the singing mummy"

aefondkiss · 12/01/2008 12:35

hello Charliesmom, welcome to the board, your son sounds lovely.

I have a dd who is 6(and fairly normal) and a ds who will be 4 in a few months, he hasn't had a diagnosis, yet, but we have seen the paediatrician and know he is on the spectrum... we are jut at the beginning I suppose.

he is quite sociable and loving and his speech has really come on in the last few months, he is still the odd child out at his ms nursery, but getting lots of support.

it sounds like you have loads of parenting experience!

did you start working in SN before your ds was diagnosed?

dustystar · 12/01/2008 12:39

Hi and welcome Charliesmomuk

I have 2 children. DD is 9 and NT DS is 7 and has no dx yet but many traits of ASD and ADHD. He loves singing and music too.

mymatemax · 12/01/2008 21:48

Hi Charliesmom
I have 2 boys a tone deaf NT 8yr old & a 5 yr old with CP, ASD plus a few other bits thrown in, he's also tone deaf but loves Johnny Cash (as if he hasn't got enough to cope with ) he does a kind of wobbly dance & mumbles along.

Hi Charliesmom.

I have a 7 year old ds with HFA and he hates it whenever I attempt to sing, and he never sings himself. He's obsessed with computer games, he's hanging over my shoulder right now moaning that it's his turn.
