Is this a reason to apply for EHCP?

My son is 9yo. Currently on the waiting for list for an asd assessment but the waiting list is 4-5 years in our area. He has also been screened at school for sensory processing issues he has. He has been showing signs of school anxiety recently and cries most mornings going in to school. School have allowed him some adjustments to his uniform, he is doing drawing and talking therapy and he goes out once a week for a small group sports lesson.

My worry is whilst he is where he should be academically, it is becoming more and more obvious how far from his peers he is socially. He is very emotional and will cry openly in front of them when he feels they have been mean or he feels wronged/frustrated in a game for example. They all walk to and from school alone and I just couldn't even imagine that at this point. I've seen them laughing at him as we walk home. I've raised these concerns with school and they just say he is coping really well but I'm not sure how they can say this when he cries going into school most days . He has also developed a stammer recently. My question is, is it worth trying to get an ehcp so he could go to one of the local specialist schools that cater for children who can access the curriculum but need help socially/emotionally etc and if so where do I even start putting it professionally on the application.

You have nothing to lose by applying for an EHCNA. The threshold for an EHCNA is relatively low - a) has or may have SEN, and b) may need SEN provision to be made via an EHCP. When LAs make a decision about both the needs assessment and subsequently an EHCP social and emotional development are just as important as academics.

Are the school providing any other support e.g. social skills support, emotional literacy support, nurture group, lego therapy…
