Hi,

My child is on the SEN register and they going to be applying for Higher needs funding and have mentioned they also would like the Ed Psych to come in. I am just wondering whether once the Ed Psych has done their assessments they advise if a specialist school may be better for the child?

I am just starting to feel this may be a better route but am unsure whether he would be granted a place, i would feel more confident with a professionals opinion but unsure if this is what they are there to do.

You should apply for an EHCNA. If you think a special school may be necessary you will need an EHCP, and the HNF and EP suggest school don’t think they are meeting DC’s needs. The EP will make recommendations about what DC needs rather than suggest a school.

You’re not going to find what I’m about to say particularly helpful. Our Ed Psych encouraged us not to delay entry to reception. She was initially less concerned than the school about his progress as he could count well in nursery. We had our EHCP granted in reception. Our DS was making progress. We had a meeting in Feb and she was pushing for a specialist provision insisting he might make even more progress elsewhere. Fast forward to April and the school have agreed he’s made sufficient progress to keep him for year one. The EP has now left her role.

Thank you both for your help, I will try not to stress for now and see what comes. Not long now and it will be another school year done and dusted.

Do you want your child to go to a specialist school? If so, request one.
