My 8yo son is undergoing ASD/ADHD assessment. QB-Tech in a few weeks. Though they felt Autism, not ADHD at his first F2F but are willing to check, which is great. He takes Melatonin to help him settle to sleep 2-3 nights/wk. Sleep has been a big issue since he was a toddler-but he never really napped, even in the car, after he was 12mths. He's always hated going to bed. Way before fear of the dark could really affect his sleep. Often is still awake 2-3 hours after his bedtime routine (which has been pretty consistent all his life). Anyway; he's recently developed this routine of checking rooms and turning on lights and shutting doors-over and over; getting up to check that the doors are still shut and the lights are still on. He is scared of the dark and prefers his sister to sleep with him. (She has indulged this over the years but is 10 now and prefers to sleep in her own room). He has always been allowed to keep his door open, light on and audiobooks playing for as long as he wants. I've always understood this fear and sympathise-tell him I was afraid too, it's no big deal. We are downstairs with him..so he's not in a far-off corner of the house. He will settle eventually in his own bed, on his own but always ends up in with us. Bedtime goes on forever. But if it's OCD maybe there's a 'right' way to deal with it? Anyone know any resources with info or have personal experience of this?
