School writing off son

Looking for some advice or guidance, as we have just had a meeting with my Year 2 autistic son’s school and fuming.

Firstly, they won’t apply for an EHCP yet, as they don’t have enough evidence of additional support needed yet. We have been having meetings for two years now!

His writing is massively behind e.g about two years but they have put some very basic targets for him to reach by year 6. When I questioned them about what level these targets were, I was told year 1. Therefore in the next four years, they only expect him to make one years progress and be behind where his peers are now. For context, he is on target for maths and slightly behind in reading. He struggles with letter formation but there seems to be no attitude to lets really focus on this and try to crack it. I just need a sense check on this is reasonable from the school or not please?

You can apply for an EHCNA yourself now if you feel one is necessary, IPSEA have a model letter you can use. The threshold for an EHCNA is relatively low - a) has or may have SEN, and b) may need SEN provision to be made via an EHCP. Any other test is unlawful.

Whether the targets are reasonable depends on DS’s needs and the rate of progress to date. They need to be realistic but not set too low. What support is DS currently receiving?

I'd apply for the EHCP yourself. It is a long process, so best started soon in order to get the support in place.
