I was shocked and offended at someone's racist language on another board and have reported to mn hq.I was offended at the language used and then shocked that no-one pulled the poster up on it. Do people really think its acceptable to use racist terms so openly.

no I think you are quite right to report it -racism is ignorance and dangerous ignorance in my view

jinglebells2shoessmells · 14/12/2007 15:22

sorry but can't see why you need the sfety on sn. I can't imagine people from say chat thinking racism is ok.

jinglebells2shoessmells · 14/12/2007 15:23

(sorry thought you were talking about another chat place)

It's not generally regarded as acceptable at all on mn, staryeyed. I'm surprised really. Fair enough to sound off about it though.

staryeyed · 14/12/2007 16:21

But noone even picked the poster up on it. I was so angry that someone could say something like that and everyone accepted as normal.

What was said?

staryeyed · 14/12/2007 16:24

And I posted about it here because you guys are all lovely and I wasnt sure of the reaction I would get if I posted elsewhere.

plese give us a clue.

staryeyed · 14/12/2007 16:59

My dp is asian and my DS is therefore mixed race. They used the word Paki and then crossed through it as if that was ok.

OP posts:
DINOsaurmummykissingsantaclaus · 14/12/2007 17:03

I'm really shocked, staryeyed.

That is completely unacceptable.

AwayInAMunker · 14/12/2007 17:45

staryeyed · 14/12/2007 18:01

needmorecoffee · 14/12/2007 18:07

cant find it and don't want to read all of chat

staryeyed · 14/12/2007 18:46

Don't want to highlight it and bring it back into light. I've posted on it questioning the use of the word and reported it. Just really upset me that noone else did.

OP posts:
wooga · 14/12/2007 18:52

I am too.

dustystaronthechristmastreeMSC · 14/12/2007 18:55

I think i've found the thread and the post has been deleted staryeyed so MNHQ obviously agreed with you. I think its unacceptable too - you were right to report it.

AwayInAMunker · 14/12/2007 19:01

Staryeyed, I didn't see it - maybe it wasn't seen by many people? [hopeful] No excuse not to question the use by the people who did see it though

staryeyed · 14/12/2007 19:04

Same person also posted a very dodgy Indian joke.

OP posts:
eidsvold · 15/12/2007 10:38

can I add - just as an aside - whilst that term has terrible connotations for you in the UK - here in Aus it is used as a term of reference especially in cricker - cause we are so lazy and every thing has to be shortened - so Pakistani becomes Paki, west indies becomes windies, new zealand are the kiwis and us australians become the aussies.

It was interesting to arrive in the UK and see a term that had never had those connotations being offensive - on the flip side - dh is uncomfortable when it is used as he is used to it being in the UK and the connotations that come with it.

Having said all that - clearly it was not used in that context and therefore carried the negative connotations - so good for you in picking someone up and no it is not acceptable to use terms like that.

eidsvold · 15/12/2007 10:39

terrible to see they also went on to post a dodgy indian joke - not on.
