Does anyone have any experience in a part time school education /part home school education.

Hello I'm a single parent with no help from any family members. I'm currently working part time, and care full time for a family member. Because of this I can't fully commit to homeschooling my SEN child full time. I do have time to do 2 days of home school with him a week on a Thursday and Friday.

How do I go about this? Any help appreciate please x

Flexi schooling is at the discretion of individual schools.

Thank you I think I will have to gather lots of supportive evidence to why this will work.

I know two families who are doing this. The DC goes to school a couple of days a week and then they spend the rest of the time either at a therapeutic centre or being home schooled (sometimes with a tutor). BUT this is because in both cases the school placements broke down with the school saying they couldn't meet the child's needs full time. Both DC have EHCPs.

In the case of my friends, the schools pass on part of the funding they receive to the alternative providers.

I believe it's been made much harder for schools to agree part time schooling due to the way the DoE allocates funding.

Do you think it might be worth applying for an EHCP for your DC? If your DC has SEN, I wonder if they may struggle with a part time place at school as they will miss out on quite a bit of the curriculum. Would this make them anxious?

Is your DC primary or secondary age?

A friend of mine is part of a home school collective and they share the home schooling between a group of them so it may be worth investigating what options/groups there are locally to you.

toomanyminifigs if a DC attends an alternative placement for part of the week it is a dual placement rather than flexi schooling. The rules are different.

I am interested in this too. I am hoping to secure a part school / part outside tutoring mix through EHCP - if issued by LA.

Imitatingdory · 21/11/2021 19:44

Hollyhocks it is important to distinguish what you want where the LA remain responsible for all the provision and flexi schooling (i.e part time school/part time homeschooling) where parents are responsible for the home education.

Actually what I mean is part time school attendance, part time tuition outside of school but provided by the LA - hopefully in an EHCP, so not really home schooling, but a mix of settings.

Holly I knew what you meant, I just wanted to point out it's important to distinguish your scenario from what the OP proposed as if it is called homeschooling/EHE the LA will state you are making suitable arrangements and they are relieved of their duties.

Yes, absolutely, you're right @Imitatingdory , and I definitely do not want to EHE or for the school to off-roll DD.
