Been having a lot of problems with the DSEs, mainly through the fact they don't like living here and they don't like school (another thread for another day). Anyway a woman from the Family support centre at the school came out last night to chat to us, and I mentioned that I ahd worries for a while about DS2 and that I thought he could be slightly Dyslexic/dysprxic. I told her some of the things he does, and she suggested looking up "SPLD" on Google, and see if it gave any suggestions. She also said that it is normal behaviour in a 7 almost 8 year old.I can't seem to see a list of signs to look out for. I am not sure now if I'm over reacting and seeing something that isn't there, or if there is an issue there that needs to be addressed

Sometimes SPLD is also known as SPD. I don't know if this site on SPD is what you're looking for.

Thanks coppertop. i don't think thats the thing I'm looking for though. i am looking for a site that would give me a general idea of what to look for with regards to Dyslexia/Dyspraxia/ADD etc

SPD isn't normal behaviour in a 7 almost 8 year old- else how would DS1 have a dx of that 9with HFA) given at 6??

there are simple checklist for dyspraxia etc, they're not conclusive though- very basic. Will see what I can find. Might be worth loking at the triad of impairments as well is she's pointing you toewards SPD, as SPD is on the autistic spectrum it is believed. Although would be much at the milder end (dyspraxia / dyslexia is as well mind you in amny professionals eyes now)

Thanks peachy. there ar eone or two things he fits into in teh Dyslexia category. I'm just really worried about him. it's not helped by the woman from the school saying that he has very low self esteem, is always trying to get out of going to school, tells DH and I constantly that he has no friends and no one to play with and that the teacher is always telling him off. She said she thinks he's depressed!

If he ahs an undiagnosed SEN he may well be depressed, I would place ds1 in that category at times. That's not your fault though.

A child with SEN would be trying to get out of going to school, etc- all teh things you say. It's a scary enough palce for some kids anyway, let alone those for whom the system is failing.

Does your LEA have a dyslexia service? Ours does 9although a waiting list ), if so contact them and demand an assessment for him.

hang on- SPLD- does she mean SPD or specific learning disabilities? Just a thought. That can refer to dyspraxia / aspergers etc. Can't beleive her advice is to google it! FFS!

LEA. ASAP

I'm not sure if she meant SPD or Specific Learning Difficulties. She just said "google SPLD"
It's been very difficult anyway becasue of the move, this is probalby not helping his depression/anxiety
