my doctors surgery is still sending me appointments for alex to have his pre school MMR booster.....he had the 1st one.....and he's been at school more than a year....and i am still scared to go ahead.
apparently there is a blood test which may confirm his level of immunity after just the one jab....and i am concerned that by not going ahead not only is he at risk from infections...but if he passed the rubella on to a pregnant woman then the impact would be just as awful.

BUT.... have 2 ASD kids already...and Alex being the complex little lad that he already is....well part of me feels i want to get past the 6/7yr old mark...and then if he is detected of being ASD too (as i have a niggle he is) then i will stop blaming MMR. (tom and leigh both had MMR...and both had bad reactions to the pre-school booster) and both were 'challenging' from birth but ASD only became obvious around age 5/6....apparently common in Aspergers....so this is why i feel desparate to get to that point with Alex...

coppertop · 12/11/2004 22:40

When I took ds1 for his pre-school DT (minus the P) injection the HV had the MMR needle ready to give to him. It was pure luck that I asked what it was as all she'd said was "Well you know what this is, don't you?" before moving towards ds1. When I told her to stop she looked highly p*ssed off and said "Why don't you want him to have it?"

BECAUSE YOU ALREADY GAVE IT TO HIM ONLY LAST BLOODY WEEK!

MsF · 12/11/2004 22:49

That is terrible!

God knows what the effect would be.

coppertop · 12/11/2004 22:59

It was hard enough deciding whether or not to let him have it in the first place. His immunisation notes were on the computer screen right in front of her as well as in his health record book - right in front of her nose.

charliecat · 12/11/2004 23:01

Here

coppertop · 12/11/2004 23:10

I shall definitely try to watch it.

Jimjams · 13/11/2004 09:19

Brain Deer hates Andy Wakefield. It is in the public domain that he has sad that he wants to bring Wakefield down. He has already written many one sided (and frankly inaccurate) articles about Wakefield. This will be very one-sided. Get ready to shout at the TV if you watch it.

Jimjams · 13/11/2004 09:24

Here we go- public statement by Andrew Wakefield following Brian Deers attempts to discredit him:

"Serious allegations have been made against me and my colleagues in relation to the provision of clinical care for children with autism and bowel disease, and the subsequent reporting of their disease.
These allegations have been made by journalist Brian Deer who has expressed, in front of witnesses, his aim of destroying me.
All but one of the allegations, which are grossly defamatory, have been shown to be baseless. One allegation remains against me personally.
That is, that I did not disclose to the Lancet that a minority of the 12 children in the 1998 Lancet report were also part of a quite separate study that was funded in part by the Legal Aid Board.
It is the Lancet's opinion but not mine that such a disclosure should have been made since it may have been perceived as a conflict of interest. This is despite that fact that the funding was provided for a separate scientific study.
It needs to be made clear that the funds from the Legal Aid Board were not used for the 1998 Lancet study, and therefore I perceived that no financial conflict of interest existed.
The Lancet defines a conflict of interest as anything that might embarrass the author if it were to be revealed later. I am not embarrassed since it is a matter of fact that there was no conflict of interest. I am, however, dismayed at the way these facts have been misrepresented.
Whether or not the children's parents were pursuing, or intended to pursue litigation against the vaccine manufacturers, had no bearing on any clinical decision in relation to these children, or their inclusion in the Lancet 1998 report.
It is a matter of fact that there was no conflict of interest at any time in relation to the medical referral of these children, their clinical investigation and care, and the subsequent reporting of their disease in the Lancet.
As far as the 1998 Lancet report is concerned, it is a matter of fact that we found and reported inflammation in the intestines of these children.
The grant of £55,000 was paid not to me but to the Royal Free Hospital Special Trustees for my research group to conduct studies on behalf of the Legal Aid Board. These research funds were properly administered through the Royal Free Hospital Special Trustees.
The Legal Aid research grant to my group was used exclusively for the purpose of conducting an examination of any possible connection between the component viruses of the MMR - particularly measles virus - and the bowel disease in these children. This is entirely in line with other studies that have been funded by the Legal Aid Board (latterly the Legal Services Commission) and reported in the BMJ . If and when this work is finally published, due acknowledgment will be made of all sources of funding.
It is unfortunate that, following full disclosure of these facts to the editor of the Lancet, he stated that in retrospect he would not have published facts pertinent to the parent's perceived association with MMR vaccine in the 1998 Lancet report. Such a position has major implications for the scientific investigation of injuries that might be caused by drugs or vaccines, such as Gulf War Syndrome and autism, where possible victims may be seeking medical help and also legal redress.
Health Secretary John Reid has called for a public enquiry. I welcome this since I have already called for a public enquiry that addresses the whole issue in relation vaccines and autism.
It has been proposed that my role in this matter should be investigated by the General Medical Council (GMC). I not only welcome this, I insist on it and I will be making contact with the GMC personally, in the forthcoming week.
This whole unpleasant episode has been conflated to provide those opposed to addressing genuine concerns about vaccine safety with an opportunity of attacking me - an attack that is out of all proportion to the facts of the matter.
I stand by everything that I have done in relation to the care, investigation and reporting of the disease that I and my colleagues have discovered in these desperately ill children.
My family and I have suffered many setbacks as a direct consequence of this work. As a family, we consider that our problems are nothing compared with the suffering of these children and their families. For the sake of these children, this work will continue."

Davros · 13/11/2004 17:26

I won't watch it, I know what I think and why and don't need to feel like putting my boot through the telly more than necessary!
MrsF, oh I mean Msf, I wouldn't feel guilty. Why should babies and children be stuffed with diseases to protect irresponsible adults? Before trying to get pg I had an immunity check for rubella as I hadn't had the illness, why can't everyone else? The same for men and mumps.

Jimjams · 13/11/2004 18:07

mrsF- if its any consolation the MMR isn't all that great (at working) anyway. Especially the rubella bit. DS1 caught rubella from a vaccinated child- who spread it all over the place as his mother (fairly enough) assumed he couldn't have rubella as he'd had the MMR. DS1 didn't spread it to anyone- we knew he'd been exposed and we stayed in for the necessary length of time. Like Davros says people can get their rubella status checked (I did before ds1).

Sterility from mumps is incredibly incredibly incredibly rare- even when caught by adult males.

Jimjams · 13/11/2004 18:08

I won't be watching it either Davros- need to keep my blood pressure down! Brian Deer will be enough to send it sky high and keep it there for a week.

Davros · 13/11/2004 18:13

All we need now is mad Dr Fitzpatrick....

MadDrFitzpatrick · 13/11/2004 18:21

Did someone call?

Jimjams · 13/11/2004 18:24

ROFL

BTW MadDrFitzpatrick- where did you get your ground level trampoline? I want one!

MadDrFitzpatrick · 13/11/2004 19:03

Following my tried and tested method I looked at other people's trampoline research. I proceeded to pull it to pieces, ignore the rest and then go my own sweet way. If I'm lucky I may get a book deal out of this too.

Jimjams · 13/11/2004 19:26

Ha ha ha

Davros · 13/11/2004 19:36

Davros · 13/11/2004 20:01

Bugger my old wellies! Just looking in my trusty Radio TImes for more info on the Jazz programme on C4 now and got directed to column by Danny Kelly (pg 31 if you've got a copy) and he starts the column with this:
"nothing is definitive in this world. Even the most exhaustive examination provides not final answers but the springboard for more questions. Its true of science (witness the endless MMR vaccine debate).......

MadDrFitzpatrick · 14/11/2004 13:42

How could anyone possibly compare me to something fake, cheap and nasty?

charliecat · 18/11/2004 20:54

this is on nowish.........

JazzyJ · 18/11/2004 22:08

Blimey, how's it ever gonna end? Wait till they're diagnosed autistic then get em done?
Don't get em done...?
get em done...?
Dunno
Tomorrows coffee morning 's gonna be buzz'n.
Hoorah for science
Boo to science
I know lets flip coins... or maybe crossing our fingers will work?

JaysMum · 18/11/2004 22:16

Just a bit too late for many of us who have had the vaccine for our kids - one day Im sure they will hold there hands up and say OOppss were sorry!!!!

From personal experience I would never let my kids take any medication now.

I had to have HRT from 21 until last year. Had been told it was perfectly safe to be taking it for 14 years - no connections proven with breast cancer etc - then all of a sudden Gynaecologist is phoning me at home saying you must stop it immediately because I was at a high risk of developing cancer.

There just is not enough research into making sure the triple is safe.

Jimjams · 19/11/2004 09:52

They won't hold their hands up Jaymum. They could have done that with the 5 in 1 when they finally decided to remove thimerosil (following the pblication of the Columbia paper). Instead they denied the decision had anything to do with thimerosil and instead had everything to do with the polio jab.

beccaboo · 19/11/2004 10:17

This programme was a wasted opportunity by Channel 4. I'm not a scientist and I don't know what the truth is about MMR, although I do think so many parents can't be wrong. But even if any of the evidence presented in the programme was true, it had no credibility at all because it was presented in such a sensational, tabloid style and with such a biased agenda. I'm not surprised nobody wanted to be interviewed by Brian Deer, he's a grub street doorstepper. Why did he interview a psychologist about whether dietary supplements are a waste of money - is this her field? Couldn't he find a doctor who would talk to him?
