So… my 10 year old sons ados is on the 17th November. I’m really apprehensive about it. I have asd and adhd and his brothers have asd (plus ones awaiting Adhd testing). Anyway my point is, I scored as having autism on the ados as an adult , however my 2 sons didn’t, however they do still have asd. My middle son was hard to diagnose (his psych at camhs said he had to get the book out to diagnose him lol) , he was thought to be autistic in reception (major speech delay) so he had an educational psychologist report which showed his difficulties. Then an ados at six, which said not autistic, it was an Adhd specialist that did his ados and she said to look into Adhd as something isn’t right and she believed he had Adhd. And said that with all criteria in the ados etc he was the complete opposite, for example he made too much eye contact, was over familiar, talked too much etc (bit like me 😳😳) . Anyway so after that he was taken into the camhs day unit for six weeks where they decided that he didn’t have Adhd after all as he scored as having Adhd in unstructured settings but was 1 point of having Adhd in unstructured settings so couldn’t diagnose that (I’d put money on him having it though! But obvs I’m not an expert) But they decided that he was indeed autistic. Was a similar scenario with my other child with asd ( he was told at 10 after an ados that he didn’t have asd, then was told at 18 by fcamhs that he does have asd, this was after his life fell apart ) I’m just so worried that this will be the outcome again for my now 10 year old DS. He’s absolutely autistic and school also agree and are the ones who have referred him, there’s no doubting it. I just worry that if this one thing… the ados… says no, then he won’t get the diagnosis he needs. Anyway I know this post won’t help anything l, I just needed to get it out! Lol

I am a Speech Pathologist. I am based in Australia and do autism assessments. The ADOS is only a tool in the diagnotic process it is not and should not be the be all and end all of an autism assessment. My daughter is asd and adhd and they didn't even do an ADOS with her they used many other assessments to diagnose her.

If the school have referred him, maybe that means he presents in a slightly more typical way and it’ll be easier to diagnose him? I hope so anyway! It is nerve wracking, I hope it goes well.

The ADOS score was only quite a small part of my DD's Dx report, which focused much more on her developmental history and feedback from her nursery. Good that you have school on your side: hopefully that will really help. Is the ADOS the final part of the assessment? Hopefully you'll hear their conclusions pretty soon after that, so at least you won't have to wait too long?
