What age should a child with ADHD be able to be trusted to wash themselves in the bath properly and to wipe themselves and wash their hands after the toilet?
Like it feels like he is at a fairly normal level as far as bath time goes - he is capable of running a bath, washing his body and hair, and brushing his teeth, but he has to be prompted to do it all and if I don’t check on him ALOT or watch him he will take short cuts or lie about doing it.
However the toilet issues are making me despair. Not only can I often not trust him upstairs alone sometimes when he uses the bathroom as he will sprinkle pee or water on the floor/wall/shower door just to observe the mess occasionally, but if he makes a mistake when wiping a number two he wipes his poopy hands on the wall. And then not wash his hands. He always tries to trick me and get out of washing his hands.
The real thing bothering me tho is that he just can’t seem to get the technique for wiping. Like either he can’t reach properly, or he tries to stand up to wipe so he can’t get access if you know what I mean, and he is quite likely to block the toilet by using a whole roll of loo roll at a time. Or he tries to use a single long piece of loo roll to wipe instead of folding or scrunching it. All these issues combine in one way or another, he never gets it right and I end up helping him.
We have had lots of conversations about germs and the importance of washing your hands, and I have walked him through the wiping process in every conceivable way.
Is this normal? We are waiting on an adhd diagnosis so I consider adhd to be an influence on his progress.
Thankfully he only goes for a number two at home so I haven’t had to worry about what he’d do without me but I suspect make a mess and try to hide it.
