Best overnight nappies for skinny 7 year old?

Pull ups aren't doing it for my son. He's 7, very lanky and practically no bum. Recently started at the eneuresis clinic but if anything it's just made the overnight wetting worse and he's started soiling overnight again. He wees a LOT overnight despite doing all the stuff you're supposed to do and despite medication. So frequently he'll get up in the morning and have flooded his bed sheets.

Ideally a 'pull up' type nappy would be good as he's just gotten the knack of being able to get up in the morning and change himself out of it. Although currently I need to then clean him up because he's pooed so perhaps it doesn't make a difference. I'd just really like to make the bed sheets last longer than one night and maybe adjustable tabs would provide a better fit?!

I've even looked at reusable but I'm reluctant to invest a lot of money on something that potentially isn't going to work!

I’ve got a skinny / tall nearly 8 year old. I buy pampers active fit pull ups in a size 7 for overnight. They don’t leak or anything and he wees a lot in the night.

I know they also do a size 8 in pampers ‘tape at the side’ nappies but they are no good for us, I’m yet to find an 8 in the pampers pull ups but the 7 does us for now.

We found the pull ups for bedwetting were hopeless when we still had soiling to deal with. They are cut low to be descrete under PJs, which on my tall skinny chil at least made them sit too low on the waist to contain everything.

Cloth alone was difficult too, due yo the bulk needed by that age for a heavy wetter. We used both from birth but had to switch. A cloth nappy cover over a disposable does give a bit extra protection though.

We switched to X small adult products, boots own Brand pull ons were a good fit, not that much wider than the up to 15 bedwetting pants but a lot higher on the waist.

Also brolly sheets that go on top of the normal sheet and a waterproof duvet from Amazon cut down on the washing a bit.

Pampers are no good unfortunately he floods them within an hour. I don't know where he puts it he has a wee before bed, I limit drinks, he's drinking more during the day AND he's on desmopressin but still the vast vast amounts of wee once he's asleep! I can only hope he grows out of it. Sadly we'd managed to knock the soiling on the head but focusing on overnight wetting has made it return and id lay money on stool withholding rearing it's ugly head again so I think we're going to have to retire gracefully from the clinic for the time being.

Anyway...I've heard about brolly sheets so I'll invest. Waterproof duvet is a new one on me so that sounds great! And I'll have a look at adult continence products, I always thought the size difference would be too much but I'm willing to try anything!

Have you been referred by the school nurse to the incontinence nurse. Your doctors may also be able to refer you. They should be an to prescibe you nappies in larger sizes and can offer support. In my area they don't currently provide pull ups its either slips for pants or nappies.

We too swapped to adult products - a mixture of Boots and Tena slips. Before that we used Libero size 7 for a short while which seemed to contain more than other size 7 pull ups.

They're from Tesco

@lozaa yes we're under the eneuresis (bed wetting) clinic. He's dry during the day. No provision for nappy allowance in my county if the child is dry during the day, no matter how old they are or how many they need at night which I can understand as many older children do have issues with bed wetting. It's starting to be very expensive with sheet protectors etc but that's why he gets DLA so I guess it balances out!

What I really hate is not being able to give him a 'proper' wash in the morning. It has to be a flannel and soapy water job because he can't do showers (sensory nightmare for him) and we just don't have enough time for a bath-we leave the house at sparrows fart and he already doesn't get enough sleep so I can't get him up any earlier. Plus a bath in the morning would send his younger (likely ADHD but waiting on diagnosis) sibling sky high and over excited just in time for school! All fun and games isn't it?! Grin

@NeverTrustASmilingCat thank you but I think we're at the point of moving beyond high street nappies, I feel like I've tried pretty much every brand and they all can't stand up to the volume he produces!

@Imitatingdory Libero! That's the brand I remember from my SEN teaching days thank you! But also good to know that Tena and Boots might do the job as they're probably much cheaper (and also...never one to turn down advantage points 😉)

Libero are Tena products. You can order free samples from them which might help you work out what fits best rather than having to buy whole packs only to find they don't fit around the waist or legs well enough. Just to add to my last post, we also use Tena pants as well as their slips, it depends on what DS1 is doing and what's in stock. He gets some via the NHS but not enough.

MollyBloomYes · 17/10/2021 02:39

@Imitatingdory yes I remember the shortfall of nappy allowance from my pupils. I think one child in full time nappies was allowed three per day and had constipation issues and associated overspill so three a day was absolutely not going to cut it. Can still remember their mum desperately asking if we could save their nappy if it wasn't soiled to put back on after swimming lessons just to eke them out further Sad you have my sympathy.
Thanks for the tip re samples, I'll have a look
