What are peoples experience of play therapy? My daughter started hers last week and the school have said she can have it every week until next year. Has anyone seen positive results from it ?

My ds did 4 private sessions of play therapy at the end of last term which I sat in on. I’m really unsure about it. I spoke to an EP who said that the approach would need to be flexible for a child with ASC, I didn’t question her more on it at the time but wish I had.

The lady we saw was lovely, and I can see how the approach would work for a NT child but I’m not sure it did much for ds. It was a lot of reflecting back their questions, asking questions like ‘is the boy scared?’ (Ds was playing monsters inc.) and making comments on what they are doing in an effort to get them to open up. Ds was very curious about her and the space but didn’t really respond to the ‘therapy’ type questions.

If it’s free then it’s not likely to hurt and may help. It’s worth a go I think. For us, I’m not sure whether to book any more.

DS ASD had play therapy a couple of years ago.

I sat through all the sessions. I have absolutely no idea what the point of it was though. I just treated it as a box ticking exercise. Its free and I think we had about 6 sessions.
