Developmental Language Disorder and Sensory Processing

Hi everyone,

My daughter has a mix of learning difficulties including a severe and complex developmental language disorder and sensory processing disorder amongst others diagnoses.

I absolutely know that we have no idea how the future will play out but I’m interested in hearing other people’s experiences of these two as they have grown up.

My daughter is almost 5 and whilst she can talk and communicate her needs, she struggles to understand much beyond basic concepts, can’t talk about the past/future apart from a few things eg tell me here’s a dinosaur at the park that we visit regularly.

The SPD is the type where she needs stimulation all the time and so we find it very hard to be at home for more than a couple of hours. It’s exhausting keeping her on the go and stimulated enough as if she doesn’t get enough she has full meltdowns - lying on the floor screaming, kicking, throwing stuff etc. This often happens in the mornings when we are tying to get ready for school etc.

The activities we can do are limited as she doesn’t really understand a lot, can’t sit still. No board games, can’t really hold a pen and doesn’t understand about drawing, can’t go to the cinema. I wouldn’t be able to leave her in a room at home as she would either do something dangerous (climb on windows sills etc) through lack of understanding or tear the place apart/empty contents of bottles everywhere.

I’m just really struggling to get my head round how this will play out on any level, it’s so exhausting.

Just interested in what life is like for adults of children with similar profiles.

Obviously we adore our daughter - I just sometimes fee overwhelmed about the future and never being able to sit at home on a Sunday afternoon and relax.

Hello User987654124 - not sure if I can offer anything useful but just wanted to say hang in there, you are not alone. I did ABA therapy for my son and it has helped but this is just my experience. I know some are against this. I hope things get easier soon 💐
