Don't know where to start, DS9

DS 9 has always been sensitive but it seems to manifesting into anxiety which is getting worse. He find friendships hard, hates it when others don't follow his 'rules' so team games at playtime are hard work for him and he often sits on his own. He is very sporty but hates team games, cubs etc.

Recently he's been coming home from school very upset that he has no friends and can worry for days, or even weeks, about something another child has said or done. Yesterday he was upset about a comment made 2 years ago! However school report he frequently plays happily with others and I have seen him do so out of school and on play dates too.

Anyway, we don't know where to start to get support - school, GP, or ?? We are in Scotland. Our school holidays start in a few days, which will be a relief, but we would like to start the ball rolling to find support for him.

I probably spend as much time in tears about this as he does (never in front of him). I don't want to jump to conclusions but wonder if seeking ASD diagnosis is appropriate, just don't know where to start.

I would talk to his teacher to see what they think and maybe the school sendco to either put your mind at rest or see what they think is going on. It may be nothing.

Then if you feel you need to go to your gp and explain why you are concerned and if they agree they might refer you to a community paediatrician.

Good luck

Hi op I’m sorry your going through this I just want to explain what happens when you go for help in Scotland. We have recently been through this. Contact your Gp first he will refer to Cahms. We waited 8 months for 1st appointment this was before Xmas so lockdown had happened this was then a zoom call. The nurse asked lots of questions and said suspected Asperger but severe anxiety. This is unusual and should never have been said in front of my son with no warning. Since then we have had major issues but asd assessment wait is now 2 years and anxiety pathway is 10 months. This is from the December zoom call not the go referee. In this time my son has deteriorated . Please do not hang about if you can afford it go private especially for his mental health. We have had a couple of hours sleep a night for weeks now no help anywhere. He panics in the evening. We have even been to A and E. help is a long way off but there are charities that can help. Contact these autism Scotland, with kids, sparks therepy. Since we have done this we have some things starting soon for us but it’s an extremely long process you need to seek help ASAP good luck.
