Wow we have been trying to get dd to blow - helps with the speech according to SALT - well she wouldn ot have a bar of it until I found an old recorder at my mum's - probably mine from primary school ( so bloody old!!)

SHe is now happily blowing away into it - started last night with single toots and now we get a few with some breaths in between... I am sure the day will come when we will hate the recorder BUT she is sooo pleased with herself. After each go she claps and laughs looking ever so chuffed.....

We also had a couple of crawls... up on her hands and knees ready to go - bit of rocking and then two crawls and then collapses to commando style... Bet she does it while I am in hospital and dh is looking after her

eidsvold · 04/11/2004 00:49

I didn't think anyone else would be up at this time ( mind you 11 am for me) She is 2 and a bit...

That's great to hear Eidsvold. Congratulations

Hi eidsvoid! I always follow your postings, it sounds like dd is doing really well! I expect the SALT has tried these ideas but just in case... Try blow painting - blobs of watery paint on paper and blow through a straw to make strange patterns. Blowing a ping pong ball across water - can be done in swimming pool or in large bowl or in bath. This is harder because she has nothing in her mouth to encourage pursing her lips. Blowing bubbles in her milk shake! (you might regret teaching her that one day!) The fatter the straw etc that you use the easier it will be at the beginning.

Somebody mentioned a while ago about rocking whilst on all 4s before crawling, maybe it was you? its very good exercise as it stimulates weight bearing through the hip joints and proprioceptive sensation again in the joints. Anyway I'm sure I'm only telling you stuff that you know already! Will be looking forward to hearing your news soon

suzywong · 04/11/2004 06:06

that is such good news eidsvold, she will be driving you bonkers with that high pitched tooting before long.

And how are you? Can't wait to get that baby out I imagine

geekgrrl · 04/11/2004 06:17

that's brill eidsvold! My dd still shouts 'aaaaah' into the recorder rather than letting the recorder make a sound, so what's the secret? Great news about crawling, too. Well done to your dd.

fio2 · 04/11/2004 06:42

brilliant news eidsvold

mieow · 04/11/2004 07:02

excellent news!! one of the trick we were told to do with DD1 was to teach her to blow bubbles, I don't know why!! Just done it!!

Fanatastic!

Thomcat · 04/11/2004 10:33

Ahhhh, that's great news Edisvold, bless her.
She's coming on leaps and bounds isn't she.

On the subject of blowing and recorders, Lottie can blow but when I blow into a recorder or mouth organ and then hand it to her to copy she holds it in in her hand and makes the noise herslef without actually blowing!

coppertop · 04/11/2004 10:45

Awww! Well done to little dd.

I predict that within a few short weeks the 'tuneful' recorder will mysteriously disappear never to be seen again.

coppertop · 04/11/2004 10:47

LOL TC! That's exactly what ds2 does. He says something that sounds a bit like "tooooot" but doesn't actually blow it.

Dingle · 04/11/2004 12:51

Ah eidsvold, great news!
dd loves bubble a we have quite a few different bubble blowers,a lot of the musical instruments she seems to put right in her mouth and therefore doesn't get the "mouth shape."
At our last Symbol session we were blowing feathers across the table, you can do this with or without straws.
DD is quite good a blowing in general now-certainly didn't need any help from her big brother when blowing out the candles on her birthday cake at the weekend!
When is your due date? It would be sod's law if she makes her move while you're in hospital!

eidsvold · 04/11/2004 19:44

due today our time - already the 5th of Nov here....... and not a twinge (picture fat tired grumpy mummy to be!!)

Hi eidsvold, I'm relatively new to mumsnet. You'll probably be busy giving birth by now but just wanted to say...great tip about the recorder. I'm going to go out and buy one tomorrow.. DS is not interested in blowing through a straw (as advised by SALT)- just doesn't understand why he should want to - but is totally inspired and motivated by all things musical. So thanks.

Also, this may or may not help, but my DS was rocking and collapsing commando style for quite some time and then the physio suggested poking him in the pelvis with a finger on each side just below the hips (on the front) whenever he collapsed and bringing him up onto all fours again. It sounds simplistic, but it really worked with DS. He was staying up on all fours and crawling within a week of repeating this over and over again.

Good luck with the birth!

eidsvold · 09/11/2004 21:38

Wow dd is crawling a lot more now - some distance - thankfully somewhat slowly!!!

BUT

this morning she used some building blocks and built a tower with them.... my jaw dropped I have never seen her do that... usually we have to build the tower for her to smash it down.

I am stunned..... she really is coming along

Wonder what I will miss next week

Great news eidsvold! We have a commando crawler here too, but she is just beginning to lift onto all fours occasionally. I might try that 'poking in the pelvis' trick! Good tip about the recorder blowing too. Best wishes for next week
