Any tips out there on teaching my ASD 4yearold his alphabet?

My boy is doing a VB (ABA) program and 2 afternoons a week at mainstream school. He has learned his numbers up to 20 quite well, but now I want to move onto letters. Anyone out there have any tips on teaching the phonetic alphabet? He learned the ABC one via that Sesame street song, but learning how to sound out the letters has stumped me a bit. He only has about 50 words, so it's not so easy to explain things to him and lots has to be done with pointing and showing.

Apparently the 'Jolly Phonics' dvd and related stuff is really good.

My DS1 (almost 5, ASD) has just begun to talk after being non-verbal (well lots of echolia, but hearing his voice is loverly regardless).

He knows his alphabet but his speech is very unclear as he doesn't move his lips (he talks like a ventriloquist), the 'Jolly phonics' dvd has been recommended to me as it teaches the letter sounds and this could help him learn tongue and lip movement.

Unfortunately I haven't been able to get hold of it yet, but when I do, I will most certainly report back on how good it is.

Jolly Phonics, it ties in the letter shape, the letter sound with an action, and helps children to learn which letter goes with which sounds.

It is very good at helping them learn tongue and lip movement - a lot of the 'harder' sounds are actually made by performing the action - ie, L is pretending to lick a lolly. P is made by pretending to puff candles out, p, p ,p! X is an x ray gun that makes the sound "Kss, ksss kss!" V is pretending to drive a van "vvvvvvvvvvv" (engine type sound, steering wheel action)

I will try and get that DVD too - thanks Graciefer and colditz!

there's an animal alphabet song on cbeebies website that seems to follow the phonetic alphabet. also a few other videos on youtube, can't remember what they are called off hand.

My DS is autistic too and loves the Jolly Phonics DVD, will watch it over and over again, which totally amazes me as it looks like a very basic and rather boring children's TV programme from the 70s!

The "Jolly Songs" CD is really good though, we're currently using the songs as reinforcers for his ABA programme.
