i was gobsmacked .

i returned ds2's forms late

they got them on 24th oct- and then on SATURDAY i go the 'dreaded brown DWP envelope)

i genuinely expected the
"thanks for your forms...we need more info...we will be contacting XYZ for this info...will let you know our descision ASAP"
etc.....

But instead the letter was dated 29th oct.....5 DAYS AFTER THEY GOT FORMS FROM ME....

and the second paragraph said they had agreed DLA!!!!

(probably cos i included with forms approx 30 sheets of various pages from books and examples of social stories etc i have to use daily with ds2)

i also names the EP to be who they contacted...but also included her last report and highlighted the 'key comments'...namely ds2 is hurting others at school- self harming- has low self esteem and that she has corncerns regarding his inclusion in mainstream.

last time they wrote to his school aswell as paediatrician- so i fully expected no decision b4 christmas.

Good grief. That must be a record.
Even dd2, severe quad CP, who is a very straightforward case took 12 weeks.
well done.

MrsForgetful · 09/11/2007 09:03

have you seen eastenders?

Honey and Billy are applying for DLA...and are filling in all the boxes with "downs syndrome" and nothing else cos they believe the DWP will 'know what they mean'

....hmmm...guess what the decision will be???? Interesting story line...about the battles to get DLA...

(my DH thinks they took one look at my form and everything i sent with it....and thought "good grief...i'm not reading all that" and just agreed it to get me off their desk!!!!)

Yay! well done Mrs F - That must be a record.

I started a thread on the Eastenders thing. We should lay bets - will it be true to life or complete fabrication.

I yelled at the telly when Honey said 'we'll just put Downs Syndrome, they'll know what we mean' ROFL!

needmorecoffee · 09/11/2007 10:13

Nah, Billy and Honey will get their DLA no probs and then everyone will think we're making it up when we say 'but...its not like that.'
Cos Eastenders is real right?

coppertop · 09/11/2007 11:34

Wow!

I still haven't finished my ds2's form yet.

Peachy · 09/11/2007 11:40

Well dojne Mrs F i have the pleasure of TWO renewals due in July...... help!

Honey and billy will get refused, the script is advised by DS groups and aprents so mybguess is they'll get a refusal and theefore a crap Christmas (coz just 2 marriage break ups (Tanya and Bradley) - well that wouldn't be miserable enough would it?

trace2 · 09/11/2007 19:40

well done, we to other week got ours back in a week a welfare rights lady did ours, when we told her we got it back, she was shocked

brandy7 · 10/11/2007 22:42

How often do you have to renew your claim? my son is 3 and was awarded high level of care component in May due to medical problems

Peachy · 11/11/2007 10:50

It varies- ds1 was awrded his for 2 years (he ahs ASD) possiblya s he was older (6), ds3 was awraded his for a year and 6 months of that was backdated due to appeal. He has a non diagnosed conditionbut has severe language issues plus things like incontinence. Both manage to coincide for renewal- on by bloody birthday! What fun! >

Sidge · 11/11/2007 13:31

Brandy - it varies. Our first award was 3 years, we renewed recently and have been awarded 7 years.

If you check the award letter it will say what period the award is for. You don't need to renew until just before that date (unless things change of course).

For the OP - that must be a record! I thought ours was quick, it was about 3-4 weeks from sending the forms off to receiving the notification.

brandy7 · 11/11/2007 21:57

Thanks for replies! it just states on the letter that my sons claim was from May to October for the high rate and then from October 2008 at the same rate, no end date. I wondered if it was because he was 3 in October, ive not heard anything. I presume they will just send me a letter for renewal in the future at some point then

saggarmakersbottomknocker · 12/11/2007 09:05

brandy - there is usually an end date, even if that date is as far ahead as their 16th birthday. From then they have to claim in their own right. I have that joy to face next.

totaleclipse · 12/11/2007 09:08

Oh god, I still have'nt done my renewal forms, arghhhhhhhhhhh

mymatemax · 12/11/2007 10:00

I've just sent off ds2's renewal forms & had a letter to say they have asked the school for a report.
The only thing is he is only at school 2.5 hrs a day at the moment & because we have spent the last 2 yrs preparing him for it he has settled so well!
So while I'm over the moon at how well he's settled his teacher said she can only really comment on his physical disabilities because they have had no major issues relating to his ASD.
F**k I know they are going to refuse!

mymatemax · 12/11/2007 10:03

Actually I was wondering...
Does anyone know if they send a standard report out to schools or are they questions specific to the child?

and do they keep all the history from the original claim, reports etc?

Thanks for your help but I bet they refuse just in time for Xmas, Oh Joy!

brandy7 · 13/11/2007 22:16

ive just re read the letter and it does actually say up to 14/10/08, so do i actually have to request a renewal or they just automatically send it to you?

oops sorry for asking so many questions!

saggarmakersbottomknocker · 14/11/2007 17:57

They send it to you automatically brandy. for an October renewal you'll probably get it sround May time. Sorry - you haven't got much 'time off' there have you.

Did you keep a copy because it makes it soooo much easier next time around.

brandy7 · 17/11/2007 19:36

hi saggarsmakers,

why are they doing it that quick for my ds then, is it because he was/is still being diagnosed do you think? hes been admitted to GOSH hospital again week before xmas for more tests and a change of drugs, but his condition is lifelong so cant see anything chaning between now and May, other than his medicine list seem to be growing!

Thanks

saggarmakersbottomknocker · 18/11/2007 10:48

brandy - it's because he's young. It's hard to convince the DWP that there isn't a magic wand and they'll be all better in 6 months. Grrr. dd's award is for medical and the longest we had was for 4 years, from age 10 to 14. Now we just have the 2 'til she's 16. I suppose I should be grateful that we got 4 years but as it took a year to get and then the renewal comes 6 months before it didn't seem all that long. All the medical evidence says that surgery hasn't fixed her, can't fix her and she's the best she's going to be; lifelong condition doesn't seem to be a term they're familar with.

Jambuttie · 18/11/2007 11:26

Must say our renewal for DT1 came back pretty quick too- higher rate and backdated too

brandy7 · 18/11/2007 15:18

thanks saggermakers, well his condition , treatment and time taken caring for him hasnt changed and i cant see it changing for a good few years till he can selfmedicate/inject. Il have to try and remember what i wrote on the last forms!

saggarmakersbottomknocker · 20/11/2007 08:56

Pays to photocopy the forms brandy
