Here are some suggested organisations that offer expert advice on special needs.

NC for this.
My son had problems at his old school. He joined in reception I was told he had no issues. He had clear S&L problems and was all but mute, he had hearing loss in both ears. Paid for a private assessment -complex and high needs assessed. School still said no problems.
Headteacher was a total and utter nightmare. I can't even begin. Lots of history.

Got S&L assessment done independently done, it took place at school through county -after the assessment she called the headteacher in and said 'X needs to go to the SRB. He is bright, friendly, nice and clearly very able but has highly complex SEN Speech needs' -he started at a Special Resource Base 1 week later despite his class teacher and the school saying no issues. He scored 0% on the assessment. He went to the SRB for S&L for a year. 4 days a week. Used to cry on the Monday which was his normal primary day. He didn't on the other 4 days - found out in July, the teacher wasn't even providing 1-2-1 agreed on the day with the TA as agreed. found out she was telling him not to worry as she would give him 'little boy work' and that she didn't realise he was deaf in one ear! She even put him to sit on his own as 'the special needs boy'.
Poor bloody sod. This is an outstanding school. The Headteacher kept telling me she didn't do SEN that other schools were more suitable -argh.............!

During lockdown he got no work set and SRB was closed. So I -a teacher but not primary did 7 hours a day with him wrapped around my online teaching, with his older siblings help. PE, Science -collecting leaves and looking at them etc -by the end of lockdown, spelling was nearly there and he was on Stage 8 of ORT, Maths he was doing Year 4 work but English and Comprehension weren't Year 1 level more like reception. July came -school refused to apply for EHCP saying he wasn't going to get one and I was a fussy parent etc.........
I was determined he wasn't going back. However, SRB reopened in the meantime I applied for EHCP. (July).

We moved county as he was discharged from SRB in December, we were moving anyway but I was determined he wasn't going back and we moved several hundred miles. He went to a new outstanding school. Totally different, supportive kind and he thrived even in lockdown. I had an email tonight -he has an EHCP given by new county. They have reviewed all evidence from SRB and private special reports and he has an EHCP -what support would he like etc. He has had an EP assessment but they haven't had it yet -full EHCP -support to be agreed with me, but place at another SRB or 1-2-1 TA in main stream is being offered, on the basis of evidence from the SRB etc

But he has passed the Year 1 phonics now and he is happy. He is Year 2 but did Year 1 phonic test before Christmas and got 36/40.

He does daily S&L with me 1-2-1 30 minutes a day 7 days a week. Whatever, a habit from lockdown that he looks forward to.

I've had some advice about EHCP. But apart from very specific support needed -what else should I be asking for? I'm still in shock!

Have a look at the booklets and webinars on EHCPs produced by SOS SEN. www.facebook.com/SOSSpecialEducationalNeeds/

Well done on getting an EHCP. Sadly too many schools put parents off either intentionally or because they are misinformed. As well as SOSSEN have a look at this IPSEA checklist.

Make sure the provision in section F is specific and quantified. No vague, woolly wording such as access to, would benefit from, or equivalent to. Otherwise it can't be enforced and isn't worth the paper it is written on.

Provision in the EHCP is taken from the reports so look at what they say. Every need in section B should have corresponding provision in F.

I’ve already said to the school and county that I don’t want the SRB place. He needs to be at the mainstream school but supported 1-2-1. I’m not having 1-2-1- being vague it must be he will have.x 3 a week with target set weekly and evidenced etc so thanks for that etc

I’ve been warned that saying he has 1-2-1 but not specific is not enforceable etc
