anyone know where I can buy it from? The gp has suggested I get hold of some for our flights to thailand, to ensure sleepy kids.

I know it isn't technically special needs, but you are the experts

ARE YOU STILL THERE?

blossomhill · 30/10/2004 00:12

I am if you mean me. I am over tired!!!!

gothicmama · 30/10/2004 05:32

LOU -don't use phenergan - it can make some kids hyper and effects growth there is a thread on it somewhere else.
You can buy melatonin milk in Sainsbury - nighttime milk

geekgrrl · 30/10/2004 06:54

well, I disagree with you gothicmama, I think phenergan is worth trying if trialled at home before. Also, I don't agree it affects growth, there's absolutely nothing about this online. Do a search for phenergan and growth and all the articles that come back are about phenergan possibly halting the growth of cancerous tumours, not small children. My dd1 took it nightly for a year from 3-4 on prescription (she had bad eczema then and her sleep was very disturbed) and is still at the top of the 90th centile at 5. Dd2 is also taking it long-term on prescription, her paediatrician said it was no problem whatsoever. It's been fantastic for us, the only noticable effects being a good night's sleep with a well-rested child in the morning and as a bonus no more throwing up in the car and no hives.

Haven't read all of this (sorry) but I would try melatonin on its own at first as its sole purpose is to regulate sleep patterns and induce sleepiness. Phenegran, although it does make you sleepy, is basically to treat something else. I got liquid from iherb.com but only 1mg/1ml strength.

Davros · 30/10/2004 11:01

Ooops, just read geekgirl's last post. I'm sure either or both would be OK if in consultation with Dr/Paed but if you're doing it independently I would try Melatonin on its own first.

mrsforgetful · 30/10/2004 11:04

as far as phenergan...agree try it at home first....i was assuming that you have used it before.....and thinking of what davros says.....good advice too....maybe keep the phenergan at the ready if the child awakes after sleep induced by melatonin???

Davros · 30/10/2004 11:04

Doh! Sorry, just been scanning this thread backwards. Its for your trip to Thailand Lou? If you come to the meet up on 12th I could bring the melatonin pills I got or even some liquid as we're not using it now. My DS gets to sleep fine but went through a phase of waking in the small hours and not going back to sleep so I gave him Melatonin then and he did go back to sleep but we both felt he woke up grumpy. So we decided to manage without it and he's back to normal, it really was just a phase.

I've used phenergan or vallergan (can't remember which) on the oldest two in the past, and it was fine. In fact had to use it for dd1 to break her awful sleep patterns when she was a baby. I'll def trial run both of them before we go anyway. I can't imagine how just a couple of doses of phenergan would cause growth problems, I would think it would be for use long term if that was the case. Like i said we used it for dd1, and she is now 5ft4 at least aged 12!

Davros, I will consult dh about coming to the meet up, as it might fit in nicely with collecting our visas from the thai embassy. Can you remind me of the time and place again?

Thanks all for your input

Vallergan is a lot stronger than Phenergan.
