ABA and special needs other than autism?

I have recently been in touch with a woman in america whose dd has the same condition as mine - aicardi syndrome. I am hoping to find out more info, but she mentioned that her dd has an ABA therapist. I have only heard of ABA as a therapy for ASD but does anyone have any knowledge/experience of it being used as an intervention for children with learning disabilities (without autism)in the UK?

Thanks RnB - yes, at the moment W is just at the special needs nursery but I am not happy with it. Am trying to find out what sort of provision we can get if I take her out.

I had the same thoughts about getting ABA funded i.e I'm sure it would be a HUGE battle and tbh we couldn't afford it otherwise. But, I am really interested to find out more. I'll email to pick your brains if you don't mind.

A friend of mine was one of the first people to bring ABA to the UK from the USA where she found out about it. She says that ABA is much more identified with general special needs or behavioural problems in the USA and not so closely connected to autism as here in the UK. Her son is not autistic and has been on a home prog and now attends TreeHouse School (LEA funded). I also have another friend whose daughter is on a home ABA prog and has Retts Syndrome (not funded yet but going to tribunal!). I think there is no doubt that it is effective with children with all sorts of dxs but, as you say, funding is another story but not completely unknown.

Just had a thought HITC, Peach might be able to tell you about ABA funded for non-autism dxs

jakbrown · 27/10/2004 18:55

HITC, yep, I've got a friend who is starting ABA for her son who has no official dx (global delay) but is not autistic. Was talking to dd's ABA consultant today and he was saying how well none-autistic kids can do on it.

heartinthecountry · 27/10/2004 19:48

I knew mumsnet would come up trumps. Would be really keen to find out how your friend gets on at tribunal Davros.

Okay, so do you think peach.org is the best place to start in finding out more?

You know that I am going to be interogating you all at the meet-up now .

HITC, think PEACH will definitely know. Look forward to a full interrogation at the meet-up!

Can I be really cheeky and ask if anyone has a copy of either Let Me Hear Your Voice or Lovass' The Me Book (?) that they wouldn't mind lending me? I promise absolutely scout's honour to return them. I just want to find out more about ABA before I even consider it for dd and these 2 books seem to be recommended. Though after other's comments about Let Me Hear, am hoping I can get past the god stuff.

Seriously, would be very very grateful.

Yep, will bring Let Me Hear Your Voice along to meet up

Davros · 30/10/2004 10:56

Don't get the ME Book. There is a fairly new updated book by Lovaas and, imo, the BEST book is Behavioural Intervention for Young Children with Autism by Green, Luce etc edited by Catherine Maurice.

heartinthecountry · 30/10/2004 12:05

Thanks Jakb - that would be great, and thanks Davros - I'll have a look on amazon for that other book.

Oh, I'll be getting that too, Davros. Haven't heard about that!

Motherof2 · 01/11/2004 17:39

Hello Im new hear,I have a 2 1/2 year old autistic son. He was diagnosed a little over one year ago.
I was wondering if any one has any info on autisum.I know alot but,I seek for more knowledge about my son.

jakbrown · 01/11/2004 17:41

Motherof2, what would you like to know? I have a three-year-old little girl who is autistic and has severe learning difficulties. I'm fairly new to it all but there are a couple of really experienced mums on here- Jimjams? Davros?

Saker · 01/11/2004 19:33

I had been meaning to post a very similar question HITC, because I wondered about ABA for ds2, who is not thought to be on the autistic spectrum but seems to have some communication problems. Following the advice in the thread I contacted peach who said they would send me an information pack but that they couldn't help beyond that because we didn't have a diagnosis of ASD. The lady suggested a couple more organistions who might be able to provide services for non-autistic children, I can't remember the names but they are listed in the info I am expecting and I will post when I know more. Did you get round to contacting peach yourself HITC?

Davros · 01/11/2004 22:16

I think there are plenty of ABA Service Providers and/or consultants who will work with non-ASD children. The ones where you would have trouble is the replication sites who MUST use children with ASD for research purposes. Some others (non-replication) do state only ASD but not many. I think I know pretty much all of them or about them or someone who is using them so please ask me before committing! You don't have to do a fulltime, intensive program and there are svs providers and consultants who will work with this too. CAT me if you want to check anyone out

Saker · 02/11/2004 10:34

Thanks Davros, I may well be in touch . I know very little about ABA full stop but wanted to find out first if there was any chance we could set it up before spending a lot of time reading about it. We see the paed this afternoon and I want to hear his opinion so we can weigh up all the options - assuming he offers us any which knowing the NHS is unlikely !

heartinthecountry · 09/11/2004 14:01

hi saker - I haven't contacted PEACH yet. Thought I would do some more reading/research first so thanks for sharing that info.

Davros - baggsy I sit next to you at the meet-up so I can pick your very knowledgable ABA brains!

Peach haven't actually sent me anything yet. Davros or anyone, do you know the names of any other organisations I could contact who might be able to help?

Davros · 09/11/2004 17:23

HITC, I'm so pleased to hear you're coming and will gladly have my brains picked (nearly typed bairns!). Saker, you could look at the TreeHouse website www.treehouse.org.uk (can't get link to work) although I'm not keen on the links they have to ABA info but they do give quite a bit there. PEACh is not very well organised but really THE place to get the info in the UK. What sort of thing are you looking for? I have lots of stuff I give to potential tutors and new parents, could bring some (in my embarrassing shopping trolley Lou!)

Saker · 09/11/2004 19:55

Davros,

thanks I'll have a look at treehouse. Tbh I really know very little about ABA and it may be completely the wrong approach for my ds. My plan was to try get an idea about how easy it would be to access at all for a non-autistic child before I spent ages reading about it in case it was just impossible. However perhaps I need to do some proper reading first and improve my understanding.
