Dd aged 8 has AS and is in a language unit. The SALT department have signed her off as she did well in the CELF tests. Thing is although she has done well in these tests she still struggles with conversations etc
She is still in unit for her social skills and that's about it.
Isn't it a bit early to be signing her off? She had a severe language disorder when she started at 4.

Are you worried she may not get the help she needs for conversation skills?

Blossomhill · 23/10/2007 22:13

Yeah and that the problems may re-occur

I'lld be a bit hacked off too , better for her to have unnecessary help than risk stopping the help too soon.

I can understand your concern here. My ds who has ASD, was described by his SALT as having a severe social communication difficulty. And yet, last month he was discharged from SALT dept due to not fulfilling their criteria. His statement even specifies that he needs help in this area.

Bibic report has come back stating that dd does have difficulties with receptive language. So fed up with chasing everything

BH same here with my dd.

had a meeting with ICAN yesterday and they said they cannot find any targets for an IEP for her.
her language has come on so well, but she still has problems, like staying mute when in a room with anyone who she doesnt know and echolalia and its hard to get a conversation going.

but i will just have to wait and see, they arent discharging her but are "monitoring" her.

you culd see if you have a local snap near you as my ds is waiting for salt and have been recommended going to snap as they help deal with speech delay also as my ds 2.6 wont talk in sentences and words are not pronounced properly that he does say although bless him his trying so i'm going to take him to snap while waiting

but anyone can go f they require help its 1 pound a sesion per person

i know she is young for them to say that!!!!

thing is she scraped through into an ICAN place because there werent many with a severe language delay in her year, we were shocked when she got in!!!!

she can communicate her needs now and talk quite fluently, she,s had a spurt in her communication, they have repeatedly told me that they only work with children who have a language problem, not ones who are suspected of having an ASD and its becoming quite obvious that she has difficulties in this area, they said she gets quite distressed when they try and take her into the ICAN room with the other kids, that she doesnt like any disruption to her routine and that she likes to be independent and quite often will ignore them!!!!!
