Autism and medication

I'm looking for advice really and experiences from parents with ASD children who have gone down the medication route. What made you decide to do it.
I have a 9 1/2 year old daughter and we are going through a really difficult time with her and it's been heart breaking to see her struggle. But previous to this she has had a really long spell of really positive behaviour.
Every now and then, the thought of medicating her crosses my mind, but I just don't know if this is the answer. I feel we've exhausted just about everything.

Just to add, she is verbal, able to express her needs and attends an SEN school. When she has difficult spells she cannot tell us what is upsetting her, I genuinely don't think she actually knows herself.

Bless her, no advice on medication I’m afraid, I have an autistic 7 year old myself and just wanted to give this a bump for you 💐

DS2 is on medication but it was the last resort, school can no longer cope, he has exhausted all the respite providers. CAMHs wanted a behavioural support plan in place before any medication but after one session with him they also backed medication. With him puberty has been horrific and I am hopeful that once puberty is over he may no longer need medication. It has not cured him but it does seem to be taking the edge off.

That’s reassuring to hear Boulshired. Since I originally posted this, we’ve had a zoom appointment with a paediatrician.
She is being referred to CAMHS, although no idea how long this will take, she’s going to be seen by another paediatrician in person and having blood tests.
Medication has been mentioned due to high anxiety and in the hope this will enable her to access other therapies. It’s not the route we planned, but I think we have to now.
Puberty is beginning to kick in now too and I think this is definitely contributing to her behaviours.
Fingers crossed they help her 🤞.

@Boulshired
My DS is starting puberty and his behaviour is deteriorating, we have some respite care lined up but I don’t think they will be able to cope with him ( I have been called to pick him up from a previous respite facility due to his poor behaviour).
I haven’t pursued the medication route for DS ourCAMHS are worse than useless, so would probably have to go private. What type of medication was you DS prescribed?

I don’t know if I will be able to cope with DS for much longer if his behaviour continues to deteriorate.
