Please can someone help, my autistic child is becoming increasingly violent towards strangers, the smallest thing will set her off and I mean smallest, she started today because we were on the bus (school is a bus ride away) and a woman wanted to get on but there was already two prams so she had to fold hers, well daughter kicked off, this is getting to be a daily thing, people talking to loud she will try to attack them I will have to pull her back and stop her but I’m worried one day I won’t be quick enough, I don’t know what to do anymore please help

@Givemeabreak88 Public transport is way too stressful for my son, lots of sensory overload and unpredictability. You mentioned you take your daughter to school on public transport. Are you entitled to transport from the Local Authority? You should be!

Thanks for the reply, I spoke to the senco but she said because I have 2 other children at the school they wouldn’t agree to transport Confused

Ok how old are your children and how far away do you live from the school?

Was this the nearest school with places available?

Does the child with SEN have an EHCP?

Givemeabreak88 · 09/10/2020 19:30

She’s 9, the school isn’t far it’s about a mile but I don’t walk with her as she’s extremely slow, it takes double the time it should and she won’t keep up, walk quicker no sense of danger, she has to walk at her own pace. Also she needs to stop frequently if we walk, she doesn’t like walking so it causes problems. It’s not just school she is like it wherever we go but as a lone parent I don’t have anyone to leave her with and I don’t drive. She does have an ehcp, and it was the nearest place available when I applied (she actually didn’t get any of the schools we applied for and was given an even further one and I had to fight to get her into a closer one but at this point she was not diagnosed)

If a child has special educational needs (“SEN”), a disability or mobility problems which means they cannot reasonably be expected to walk to school, then they are an ‘eligible child’ and are entitled to home to school transport. See here:

www.ipsea.org.uk/children-with-sen-a-disability-or-a-mobility-difficulty

It is irrelevant if you live within the statutory walking distance.

Presumably your other children walk to school?

@Givemeabreak88 Yep @Ellie56 is totally right! I would also make a case from the safety side and that travelling on public transport is clearly causing distress.
Let us know how you get on! 💐

Have you applied for disability living allowance for your daughter? If you get awarded this and I’m sure you would get at least low rate care but also low rate mobility due to her issues with getting to school. You could then uses this money for a taxi as school is so close hopefully it wouldn’t take up too much of the DLA.
