Insensitive GP sounding off, sorry!

Can't believe the conversation I have just had with my GP. He is relatively new to the practice and I have heard that his bed side manner is not good BUT really!... I had to take ds2 to see him re poss ear infection; whilst I was there I felt I ought to mention that we were being seen re-some general concerns about ds2's development, just in case he thought ds2's passiveness was some kind of side effect of his illness. GP scanned through computer notes and said see what you mean' then said it must be worrying' (too b*y right!) but I remember some friends of ours having a baby when we had ours and they kept saying how good she was and how placid and I thought Oh Dear' then he went on to tell me that it all turned out ok because even though (to quote) she is as thick as two short planks and as fat as a house, she did find someone to hook up with and therefore has got some quality of life' I was stunned at that point and reminded the GP that I just needed my ds2's ears looking at! Despite that he continued with `so he (wagging a finger at ds2)might not be the brightest out the pack, but he might have a reasonable life' Oh s*t I feel like crying! I was bad enough before I went to see him! Incidentally DS2 has raging ear infection and we could have done with getting out the surgery a lot quicker and without the sermon!

Complain in writing.

meea · 19/10/2004 18:04

Thats disgusting get writing that letter of complaint.

lou33 · 19/10/2004 18:21

How awful Merlot. I know you probably don't feel up to it now, but you absolutely MUST complain in writing. Don't let him get away with it.

ScummyMummy · 19/10/2004 18:24

Please complain if you have the strength. That is totally and utterly disgraceful.

Caroline5 · 19/10/2004 18:32

God Merlot, that is appalling. It reminds me of when we had early worries about dd2 who has microcephaly (unusually small head) and the GP laughed and said to dd "Oh, are you a pinhead?" Also think you should complain to the practice manager, if you feel up to it.

coppertop · 19/10/2004 18:32

Poor you. Complain if you can.

moomina · 19/10/2004 18:33

WTF?!

I can only echo what the others have said. Please put this in writing (to the surgery and your PCT). It's a completely outrageous thing for a GP to say and no way should he be allowed to get away with it.

donnie · 19/10/2004 18:43

DEFINITELY complain and try to be as specific as possible about the exact words used. This guy sounds like an arse of the highest order.

snmum · 19/10/2004 18:49

NNNNNNNNNNNOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOO!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

what are these GP's like? my last one was useless, used to rile me something rotten

roisin · 19/10/2004 18:53

My jaw just hit the floor ... I am speechless!

Merlot · 19/10/2004 18:56

Thanks for all your support. This GP has only recently returned to general practice after being in the pharmaceutical industry for 15 years - I wish he would go back there! I will definitely complain to his partner, who is a lovely lady. Incidentally, only just realised that with all that he didn't bother to listen to his chest, which is now rattling like a train engine!

Absolutely speechless.

Jimjams · 19/10/2004 20:12

Good grief. Completely stunned.

funkydiva · 19/10/2004 20:13

That is truly dreadful, you must complain in writing.

Angeliz · 19/10/2004 20:16

DEFINATELY COMPLAIN!!!!

That is appaling, what a prick!!

Chocol8 · 19/10/2004 20:22

I'm so sorry Merlot, that is outrageous and i'm stunned and shocked - and your poor little ds! That w**r ought to get all that's coming to him.

OMG ! He should be struck off - I'm appalled. You must complain. My blood is boiling so I can only begin to imagine how you must feel.

blossomhill · 19/10/2004 20:48

What an A* hole. Seriously I often wonder why some people do the job they do
Please, please complain about this ignorant pig!

nappybaglady · 19/10/2004 21:47

I'm not a GP but I do work in healthcare. I am embarassed that i have colleagues out there who could treat someone like this. Please, for the sake of good GPs as well as you and your family, please COMPLAIN LOUDLY

Saker · 19/10/2004 22:20

I have to make a confession - my dh is a GP (don't shoot me!).

I told dh about this and he said that the sad thing was that the doctor probably felt he had been really reassuring and helpful!

Needless to say my dh would never act like this, they are not all bad, honest.

Saker · 19/10/2004 22:21

Sorry meant to say, I definitely agree you should complain - because he probably hasn't got a clue how crass he was.

heartinthecountry · 19/10/2004 22:45

Write a fing strong letter of complaint. And please, do not take this to heart. You know your ds2 is wonderful, and quite frankly, will always always be a better person than this absolute of a GP .

tamum · 19/10/2004 22:49

Bloody hell. He needs to be struck off, frankly, as does caroline5's doctor.

edam · 19/10/2004 22:53

Merlot, outrageous. As everyone has said COMPLAIN in writing to the practice manager and to your local primary care trust's chief executive. May stop this t*t saying something equally appalling to the next special needs child who attends his surgery.
