Melatonin for ASD, was it difficult to get on prescription for your child?

Dd (age 11) was diagnosed finally with autism a few months ago. Night times are terrible a lot of the time, it has always been like this and I'm burnt out. All the anxieties come out, worry about school next day and no matter how patient I am it regularly ends in a prolonged meltdown. Her brother is 2 years older, his sleep is often disturbed and he then in turn gets pissed off and frustrated with the situation which doesnt help, it is so shit and exhausting Sad

I have ordered from Biovea in the past, give it to dd a few times a week, when I can predict high anxiety times and it works great. Problem now is I have been waiting 5 weeks (delay due to Covid they say) for delivery from US and it's not looking like I'll get it any time soon! I've had a neighbour knock tonight to ask if the noise could be kept down. Dd was mid meltdown, asking her to stop doesnt make it happen! This situation is not unusual, had the police out in the past when someone called them and folk knocking to see if all ok at all hours due to the noise coming from the house. It's just too much.

Anyway, what I'm asking is, for those of you who have melatonin on prescription for your dcs, was it difficult to get. I am envisioning them wanting a 6 month sleep diary and such things and we are at rock bottom here. Discharged from camhs now so my understanding is I need to ask GP for a paediatrician referral? Any advice would be greatly received, thanks

I find the NOW brand on the iherb website to be excellent and they deliver in a few days.

@xxlostxx doesn’t your dd have six monthly check ups with a paediatrician until she is 18? That’s who prescribes my dc melatonin. All children with ASD are with community peads from path way to adulthood when they are transferred to adult asd team.

I've only got the option of one brand as I live in myanmar, so I have to grab what I can get. I did initially buy tablets but not a chance in hell he'll take them.

@openupmyeagereyes

Our tablets (which were slow release) were 2mg also but we weren’t told to increase if it didn’t work, which it didn’t. Our issue is very early waking, we generally don’t have issues settling him to sleep.

Can I ask if the melatonin helped the early waking? Our DD is waking at 5am and I'm desperate to stop it.

Literallynoidea I’m afraid it didn’t and ds is usually awake before 5am. It works for some but not all unfortunately.

We still have the early morning wake ups around 5 each day but he now goes straight off to sleep at night within half an hour of taking itSmile
