Parent's evening shocker

Turns out that leigh's teacher DOES agree that he has 'Needs' ....but she feels leaning more towards Semantic/Pragmatics.....and even went as far as to say that he'd be better in a 'Unit' class .And.....someone on here recommended a great SP website and i identified alot of his difficulties on there....and if for now the teacher 'treats him for that' then i will be happy.
However.....this same teacher is the one who said he'll get blood poisoning from picking his warts!

We are waiting for the result of his SALT assessment- and then the paed will do the D.I.S.C.O (diagnostic tool for ASD).....then the verdict.
I am relieved that THE TEACHER agrees there are difficulties.....and at the moment i am not concerned exactly WHAT label he will get.....all i want is for him to be in a supportive environment.

My child is the same boy whatever his diagnosis....
at the end of the day there is a fine line between alot of these disorders.....and as Mike Stanton says in his books."A LABEL IS A SIGNPOST"

sHOW ME THE WAY!

Mrs F - Is leigh your youngest son?

Jimjams · 18/10/2004 20:37

Well done MrsF.

Did that signpost thing originate with Mike Stanton? I'm always using that phrase - the words "we don't want to label" bring me out in hives Is Mike still on Aut-UK (haven't been on for ages?) Must credit him in future!

coppertop · 18/10/2004 21:11

Yep, Mike is still posting on Aut-UK AFAIK.

Well done, MrsF. It looks as though you'll be going for a hat-trick round about the same time as I go for a double.

onlyjoking9329 · 18/10/2004 21:22

we have done the hatrick, thou we did do twin girls at the same time, kinda like buy one get one free, and boy am i glad my son was not a twin

JJ- I have an excellent book by him LEARNING TO LIVE WITH HFA....JKP (OFCOURSE!)

oN PAGE29-subtitledA SIGNPOST NOT A LABEL he goes on about how we all are desparate for a dx....get it then nothing....and for us to see it as a sign post.....so i guess it was him.

i admire him alot- he's really trying to get flexi-schooling....that would be great for Tom...he is off to secondary school next year.

he also wrote a brilliant bit about how us parents of ASD kids end up feeling like we have Munchausen's by Proxy- such is our desperation to 'prove' our case we learn all there is to know....and then get no where!

I think he also started the WORRIER/WARRIOR parents ....there is a chapter dedicted to this

I feel today we had a bit of 'concrete' to sink our teeth in....the mention of possibly a place in the unit was a pleasant suprise...

Blossom----Leigh is my 7 year old- Tom is 10 Alex is 5.

Tom and Alex are 2 peas in a pod- leigh is the one i have most difficulty with- his literalness/rules/routines and friendships. The teacher mentioned that he is always following her around the class....i almost laughed....as i feel he is glued to me sometimes! It appears this is not a 'clingyness' thing- but more one of 'body /spacial awareness.

when Alex's teacher said tonight that he keeps covering other kids ears when there are loud noises.....plays with THEIR lables on their clothes- cannot sit still- cannot work for over 5 mins on one subject......distracts others- though retains information........well- tom was described the same way 5 years ago......

the rest is history.
