Where to turn now?

My dc is 12 and has sen and suspected asd/adhd, he is in mainstream school. My problem is headmaster says no help unless he has a statement (Wales) but senco agrees he needs help but does nothing, refused a statement as they want to see the outcome of the educational phycologists next assessment, can't get the ed phyc to return calls or emails since Jan when he should have seen him again.

We are in the middle of the asd/ADHD assessment but it will be delayed indefinitely due to covid, DC has severe anxiety but been told he can not have any counselling due to neuro assessment.

I don't know where to turn for any help now, DC doesn't want to go to school and I don't really want him too as he has been shielding, anyone had the same?

Sorry I feel your frustration but I'm in England and the education system is different here.

I'm not familiar with the Welsh education system, but I did find this link that might help.

www.snapcymru.org/help-for-families/

It looks as though parents can ask for statutory assessment themselves.Maybe this might be worth looking into if the SENCO is so useless?

Thank you for the link I'll have a look, it's madness that kids just get lost between agencies and there's nothing parents can do.

Have a look around the IPSEA website and maybe contact them for support. They are really good at this sort of thing.
www.ipsea.org.uk/
I know they do a master class for parents trying to get an EHCP in England (this is what is needed in England instead of a statement- it stands for Education, Health and Care Plan and is wider and more joined up than the statements they have replaced)

The IPSEA master class webinars are really well regarded by parents. Not sure if they do one for Wales - slightly different system in Wales where statements have been replaced by IDPs - individual development plans - and the emphasis is more on school assessment and provision. The best simple explanation of the changes and legalities I have found so far are on this solicitors web site
www.senexpertsolicitors.co.uk/site/news/send-in-wales-all-change
Please note I have no knowledge of the actual solicitor, just found their explanation of the changes really helpful.

Only just seen your post. Start the process yourself - we did (also in Wales). The LA will have to engage EdPsych etc as part of the assessment process - it should take a maximum of 26 weeks from start to finish. They'll try and fob you off along the way to avoid issuing a Statement. Don't be taken in - keep going until the end. Appeal if there's a refusal to assess ( something like 90% of refusals are overturned). Make sure you get an absolutely watertight Statement, again appeal if you need to. We went from "she'll never get a Statement" to having our choice of specialist independent school. Have a look at the 'Not fine in school' facebook group.

Welshmum3, lovely positive outcome for you, I just despair of ever getting anywhere, I have now asked school for a multi agency meeting to hash it out and hopefully get somewhere, if not I will apply for a statement again and not let them fob me off this time, many thanks for sharing your experience.
