Socially inappropriate behaviour

Hi
My DS age 7 is different to the other kids.
He can not cope with any social settings and will become loud, rude, interrupt, hyper and generally very difficult. We can be sat at home chatting and drawing calmly and as soon as guests come his behaviour changes.
In extra curricular activities he struggles to listen and focus. He will often become really silly and act up when under pressure at end of term event’s regardless to who is watching, he is the kid smiling and pulling silly faces.
Parties are a nightmare and often result in him storming off when he dosn’t win.
I dread taking him out as he has no impulse control with his actions or his speech.
At home he is mostly o.k although we do have to ask him several times to complete a task.
He does not respond to any reward or consequences.
I have no idea where to start but I’m concerned for his future. I don’t know how to go about finding out if he has a condition and if so what condition he has.
I’m worried to call the gp as he seems to just about get by in life I feel like they will fob me off.
Any advice on where to start would be really appreciated thankyou.

I think you need to make a list of all the things that concern you (keeping a diary for a few weeks can be useful) and then make an appointment to speak with your GP and ask for a referral to a paediatrician.

You could also speak to the school SENCO.

Hi Ellie
Thank you for your advice. I think you are right, it all feels very daunting and scary to me at the moment.
I’ll try to get a phone call with gp as they are not seeing people in person at the moment.

Hi OP, much of your post rings true for us as well! My child is very similar and it seems to be getting worse with age rather than better unfortunately! Does your son seem anxious about social settings, parties etc? How are his friendships at school? I hope you've found your school or GP were able to offer some useful advice.

Hiya.
We have decided to let the school get going again before we ask them for support.
He always wants to do social things but acknowledges himself that he finds it difficult.
I'm not sure if he is getting worse or it just shows more now he is older and all the other kids just seem to find socialisng easy and he doesn't.
He does have friends and he has been invited to lots of parties pre covid.
I watched him at an extra curricular activity this week and he just can't be still at all although he was listening at least lol.
Some days I worry myself sick about him and other days I am better at accepting that it's just the way he is.

I understand. My 6 year old doesn't storm off ( although he does bolt given half a chance) but he is the other extreme, telling random strangers that he loves them and trying to lick their faces. He also doesn't understand that he shouldn't hiss at people when they annoy him like the cat does.

Elliejj - hope you don't mind me asking if your child has a diagnosis at all? Traits sound very similar to mine!

elliejjtiny · 21/09/2020 12:17

@Spindle55 we are very close to him being diagnosed with autism. Paediatrician said he would have been diagnosed at the appointment we had last week but it was a telephone appointment so the paediatrician wants to meet him first.

Thanks Ellie. Hope you didn't mind me asking. How long has he been displaying this sort of behaviour?

OP - how is your son settling in back at school?

Ilovechocolatetoomuch · 21/09/2020 19:22

I find it all such a worry.
I havnt phoned the gp yet as I’m worried they are going to tell me the world has bigger problems than my son.
He has settled in o.k. His teacher seems really nice and understanding...so far!
