FINALLY! A SALT appointment after 17 months

ds has his appointment next Saturday after being referred in May 2003. I wonder if we win a prize for waiting the longest... trouble is this is just an initial assessment and he may have to wait again to be actually treated.

Fingers crossed you get a real appointment soon. There is such a shortage of SALTS.

blossomhill · 16/10/2004 15:32

Good luck Eulalia. Hopefully you won't have to wait too long for a follow up appointment

17 months??? Glad you finally made it to the top of the list. Good luck.

Wow that's a long time. DS2 went to see his Dr on Thurday and she wasn't happy that he still hadn't had a SALT assessment but we've only been seeing her a few months. He has an appointment in November to discuss everyone's reports so he should see a therapist soon, hopefully.

Hope it all goes well for you

Wow we have been lucky we waited 6 months for an assesment and then had to go on another waiting list.We are still on the waiting list but the salt who carried out his assesment has come to see him every few months in her own time as she was concerned that he needed therapy right away.Lovely lady .

There is a real shortage of SALTs in this area. If we lived just a few miles away in the city he'd probably have been seen in a few weeks. My friends boy who I feel has absolutey nothing wrong with him has been receiving therapy. That kind of thing really annoys me.

BTW I am doing some notes for the meeting - should I mention his pragmatic difficulties or does the SALT just look at verbal language?

leigh had a SALT assessment 3 weeks ago and i am awaiting THE report

She observed him in class and 1:1 and noted things such as his lack of concentration, poor attention, interrupting teacher, body language/awareness.....as well as testing his ability to 'read faces',guess 'what happens next' in a series of pictures. She then just chatted to him generally and picked up on his over intense eye contact, inappropriate questions, and poor conversation skills- despite his high vebal skills.

she didn't menntion the word 'pragmatics' but she went into some depth about his absence of 'turn taking ' in converstion- and his tone of voice - which i am sure i read are under the 'pragmatics' heading.

at the end of my chat- i asked her whether she had seen enough to convince he that he needs further assessment for AS...she said 'Without Doubt'....but untill i get THAT report i shall not believe her!

Thanks Mrs F and good luck to Leigh.

Definately have some issues here such as not responding when spoken too, speaking too loudly, eye contact, interupting, totally ignoring any kind of social cues, not saying good morning to the teacher etc. Also inappropriate gestures such as pointing or stabbing. Must go off and make some notes.

Keep us posted on the result.

I am going to seem really think now but i keep reading about this SALT in your messages,

What is SALT

coppertop · 19/10/2004 12:15

SALT = Speech and language therapy/therapist

Hi again, finally got round to updating this. Not got the report through yet but the SALT says that ds scores about age 3.5 - 4 on the tests. This means he has progressed a year since he was first assesed which is good but obviously he's still well behind. He's to get therapy but we've to go on another bloody waiting list for about 5 months. She said his semantics are good but he's finding it hard to find the right words for what he wants to say and is getting the use of words mixed up. He is also hopeless at those sequence type stories as he just stares at the one picture. Jigsaws are hard too. On the other hand his reading and writing at school is brilliant.

Mrs F - how did Leigh get on? I expect you've posted on another thread but this is the first time I've been on here in weeks so it may take awhile to catch up.

thanks for asking....well the SALT says he is showing impairmants in the TRIAD asscosiated with Aspergers...and she advises the school use statagies for Aspergers(social stories, word Jigs, and visual innstructions etc)

the school are asking her to be more specific as it seems that the only 2 at that school with AS are my 2 boys! they have many children with language delays- but none with a ASD

the teacher seems abit reluctant- so may have a battle there- but the head is keen.

we have a senco/IEP review on weds- so i am hoping they will start the statementing off soon after that.

hope you get your report soon- it was good for me to have something in writing to back up what i allready new.
