SEN register

My daughter (7) is diagnosed autistic. She also sees a psychologist for anxiety and is under a dietician for eating problems. Before lockdown, the school were questioning ADHD as there were problems with concentration.

Despite all this, support from the school is not great. She goes to a weekly anxiety group and that's about it. She has attention problems on the classroom, has meltdowns in the lunch hall, refuses school to the point of me carrying her in and has endless social problems with peers. She is also not on the SEN register and the school refuse to put her on as academically she is bright.

I hate this as I feel like they totally disregard her social and emotional situation needs because she meets academic targets. Her behaviour after school is terrible as a result of her masking all day and receiving little support for her needs. I've asked if they can just do little things like prompt her to go to the toilet, wash hands, bring reading book home, help socially on the playground, support going into dinner hall, support going into school etc. and they just dismiss it like she's the same as any other child. This then results in even worse behaviour at home.

Am I being that unreasonable suggesting she goes on the SEN register under SEMH and receives a proper plan and support? I m not taking about an EHCP, I'm taking about just being under the SENCO.

Yes, DD should be on the SEN register, probably under communication and interaction which includes ASD.

If school are not supportive, apply for an EHCNA. The legal threshold is has or may have SEN, and may need SEN provision via an EHCP. Your post suggests she meets the threshold.

Follow up conversations with the school via email so that you have a paper trail.

Thanks, I didn't know about that, I only knew about EHCPs.

Do I go through the local authority to get this done? My daughter's school is an academy - I don't know if that makes any difference.

Yes, you apply to the LA for an EHCNA. IPSEA have a model letter you can use.

Thanks, I will definitely do that Smile

Yes definitely apply for an EHCNA. The type of behaviour your daughter is displaying at school is usually an indication of unmet needs.

This link explains about EHCNAs and EHCPs.
