Extreme sensitivity to noise we can’t control! Help x

We are having a nightmare. Our poor DD (ASD) can’t cope with any noise she can hear surrounding our house, by neighbours or in distance. - power tools, lawn mowers, roadworks etc. She is struggling massively, in her own home. It’s getting unmanageable and we don’t know what to do. Tried everything.

Pls help! Anyone struggled with this?

Also, shouting and screaming at neighbours

I assume you have tried ear dendenders or giving her headphones so she can listen to music or something of her choice?

Oh poor love.sorry this is really obvious but have you asked for a referral to an audiologist? There's something called hyperacoustica which is extreme sensitivity to noise, but I believe it requires a different approach than just using ear defenders, for example

I think this is called hyperacusis. Check the NHS website and NAS should have some information. I am so sorry your daughter is struggling! My son has noise sensitivity but not as extreme. Speak to your GP. There is sound therapy and other interventions available.

My Ds special school introduced a listening therapy. It’s helped him overcome his sensitivity to noise. It’s played in the background at school (under supervision) and it’s been a miracle. But, if a child has epilepsy they cannot have it on. It’s the weirdest sounds, like chimes?? And really not musical at all. But it worked for my son. He would previously meltdown over any sudden noises, even people laughing and it became a huge problem! Hope this helps.

SpecialChildSupermum can I ask you about the listening therapy? A friend of mine's daughter has extreme sensitivity to noise and nothing has worked effectively to relieve her distress. Is it a specific company that your school used or did they have a teacher trained in it?
