We got amended Final EHCP last week and it now has everything he needs on it in full specificity!

Just to say thanks to everyone here who gave advice when I was struggling and had 100 questions.

It took a whole year but we got there and did not have to go to tribunal. We simply wrote/emailed back the flaws and corrections needed. We had to do this a number of times and eventually had a kind of mediation meeting to which I took a SEN legal representative.

But persistence paid off.

Fingers crossed this will stand us in good stead for negotiating a suitable secondary placement in the autumn when he will be Y6.

A huge thanks once again, you were my life line. Wine and Flowers to you.

Great news Kiss. Just so you know - when it's a phase transfer from primary to secondary, the LA has a legal duty to amend and finalise the EHCP by 15th February at the latest. (SEND Regulation 18).

Great - thanks. They were talking about having annual review in Oct/Nov time. So everything that gets added at that point should refer to the upcoming secondary placement? small class size is the main one I think. Currently he has 1:1 for mornings and extra floating support in afternoons. In enhanced resource unit he won't have 1:1 so much as class size is around 10 to 12 as I recall.

If he still needs 1:1 support it should remain in the EHC plan, regardless of the school. You should also talk about transition arrangements. Have you already identified a school?

Yes we have found a school.

The LA said provision would not be 1:1 for subjects like maths/Eng as class size is half normal - 12 kids approx.

Obviously things like speech and lang would be 1:1 or very small group as there are specific things to work on for him. Ditto exercises for DCD etc. We won't know their decision until next Feb but they were guardedly positive saying as long as there is space as they don't know how many will choose the unit/school (yes I know this is tosh don't worry).

I think he would be OK on their class ratio and studying at the levels they do - functional skills not to GCSE level. I don't think he could do GCSE's at 16/cope at mainstream secondary, it would just set him up to fail. He is Y5 and working at Y1/2 levels for literacy/maths.

...and class of 12 had 3 adults in the room as I recall when we looked round. So a 1:4 ratio based on what we saw.

Do pupils from the enhanced resource unit spend some time in mainstream classes or mix during lunch/break etc? If so, even if DS doesn't need 1:1 in the unit, if he will need it to access MS classes or social areas make sure that this is covered in section F.

KisstheTeapot14 · 12/06/2020 12:38

Yes - if it looks like he would benefit from time in mainstream class they will facilitate with 1:1 SENCO said- so yes.

Will ensure wording right for that, a good point.
