Youngest ds aged 5 is diagnosed with gdd. Undergoing assessment for asd since he was 2 although that's been paused due to covid 19. He's been showing symptoms since birth though and paediatrician was concerned about his sight when he was tiny because he made no eye contact and didn't smile.

Anyway, he's now in year 1 in mainstream school and doing the work that the teacher emails to us. We've had the usual meltdowns and violence and screaming, usually directed at me. He had problems with continance at the beginning of lockdown which often happens after any kind of change. His pica which had gone for nearly a year is now back as well.

School now want him to come back in June, with the rest of year 1, in classes of 5-7 children for 1 morning and 1 afternoon a week. The headteacher has said it will be good for their mental health to be back and the keyworker children are enjoying being at school. He said safety of the children is paramount but they can't guarantee children will do social distancing.

I don't know what to do. Dh wants him to go back and tbh I could really do with the respite and the chance to focus on my older dc without having to worry that ds has flooded the bathroom, climbed out of a window or eaten some lego. I'm worried that all the changes will be too much for him or that he will lick something or someone at school and catch covid 19. On the other hand if I keep him off until September I can't see everything being back to normal then so I will have the same problem. I can see myself keeping him off until September and coping ok but the idea of having him at home full time for longer than that with no break makes me think I can't do it. Mind you in March I didn't think I could cope this long.

We have an autistic ds(6) in year 1 in mainstream and are undecided too. I’ve chatted with the SENCO and head about what the provision is likely to be and I really have no idea how it will go. He will be with a third of his class, in a different room, maybe a different teacher, and will not be able to take movement breaks outside of the classroom in the way he was previously able to. He will have a 1:1 but I think they will try to be as hands off as possible.

If he does go back I think it will have to be mornings only. I think that will be enough for him to do some work and spend time with other kids but not have too long to get frustrated with the restrictions.
