Morning all!
I am wondering if anyone has any reviews on two books I have seen recommended on here a lot. One is It Takes Two To Talk and the other is More Than Words by Fern Sussman. I am wondering which one to purchase or if I need them both?
My 28 month old is awaiting SALT and ASD diagnosis. He did have a handful of words but they’ve all gone and not returned. We have completed a chatterbox course, twice, but no development.
Thank you :)

@LadyRenoir how are you getting on with more than words?

@PinkDaydreams I am going through it so slowly cant give much feedback yet to be honest! I did find the first pages an enlightening read in terms of spotting certain behaviours and the reason behind them that we observed. By skimming through, some of the sections are aimed at children who are a lot more 'communicative' than mine, so will probaby not be of much use just yet, but I need time to sit down and be able to go through it properly. How are you finding it if you got it already?

@LadyRenoir thank you for your reply. I’m the same, been reading through it from the beginning. He’s doing a lot of pulling me to where he wants to go or putting my hand on his coat when he wants me to take it off, or on his belt buckle when he wants to get out of the pram. I really do hope that when I do start putting (more) strategies into action then I’ll start noticing a difference with him. To be honest bits I’ve read so far I am already doing with him.
Good luck and keep me updated, I’ll keep you updated too!

@buildingbridge I see what you mean regarding it takes two being a waste of money. I ended up purchasing both books and have found that it takes two I am already doing all of ‘it’.
I’ve been stupid though and been reading both books at the same time, then concentrated on just it takes two, so I’m now throwing myself back into more than words.
@LadyRenoir how are you getting on?

Yes you are totally right. The book I was thinking of is Talkability, but to anyone who has done More than words and thinks their kid is ready for the next step - Talkabilty is amazing and would fully recommend it. 😁

I think the books have slightly different purposes? As I understand it, More than words is for autism/social communication difficulties. It takes two is for language delay and Talkability is for older verbal children on the spectrum?

@PinkDaydreams Sorry for the late reply. I still have not got far into the book, but we found a fabulous speech and language therapist who is using a lot of their menthods and has trained with MTW course, so we end up using a lot of the techniques anyways. We are seeing very slow but still progress- for us it's huge he started requesting things and putting two words together on occasions. I think (hope) with consistency on our part we will be able to support him better and better.
