DD doing really well with her speech

the ICAN therapist came to see her yesterday and was astounded by how much she has come on

she played games and was very cooperative apart from when she had to answer questions about pictures and she got distressed and started pulling at her hair.
we were at one point thinking she would have to go into the language unit when she starts primary but he said she doesnt need that now, she will need a bit of support in mainstream primary, which is what me and DH were thinking-(statement time coming up) we are so pleased, she still repeats things and wont talk when there are a few people present but she,s doing brill, im so proud of her.

That is brilliant news jenk. It's great when they make a big leap forward with speech, isn't it? DS has really come on as well and is talking in complete sentences, using the past tense and even attempting to initiate conversations.

TotalChaos · 14/09/2007 09:53

great news! DS is now starting to speak in simple sentences.

That is so brilliant, all.

Gives me hope for DS3.

dinosaur-6 months ago we all had real concerns with dd,s lack of speech, she was just uttering one or two words and not speaking most of the time and she has gone from that to speaking clear sentences, i was really worried at one point but she,s done really well, hopefully same will happen with your DS

TotalChaos · 14/09/2007 16:31

really sorry about my last post, don't want to bring your thread down Jenk, had hoped I could get it deleted, but evidently not. sorry.

Dinosaur · 14/09/2007 17:37

Do you mind asking me what is the nature of your childs SN TC, and how you went about getting a private SALT? Does anyone think this would help?

I found your thread inspiring Jenk and am very pleased for you. DS1 has GDD and still no speech at 5 although has picked up on PECS really well and is very clearly interested in language. I want to try and develop this.

Pages - DS isn't due to see paed etc until January February. I suspect he will be found to have AS or HFA, if not,he will be found to have a speech disorder.

I found the private SALT through the ASLTIP we bsite (www.helpwithtalking.com). I think it is very worthwhile (if you get someone with the right specialism/experience of course!), as it doesn't need to be on a frequent basis; the SALT can draw up a program to set you on the right track for working with your child, bringing your child on etc. For a first assessment, it cost us £150 (but that included 2 home visits and a nursery visit) as well as written report and program, then for hourly follow up appointments every few months £50 (idea being to review/give me pointer on working with DS).

Thanks, TC, that's kind of what we get already with the SALT we have, and what we got at BIBIC. Now that he is at school there will be a SALT on hand two or three times a week too. I guess I would like to pay someone to work with him intensively for a few hours at the weekend, doing all this stuff! I do my best but I know it's not enough.
