ADHD advice needed

As you all know dd has a language disorder and October last year CAMHS dx her with ADHD. I wasn't really sure if I agreed at that time and the school didn't think so either.
I am seriously thinking that hyperactivity is dd's main problem really. Everything else has come on so much, the language, social skills - still needs help on this but progress is being made but her attention levels are causing me great concern. She simply cannot sit still, is into everything, makes an absolute mess and doesn't realise it and very impulsive, hates waiting her turn, loud etc. The thing is she always sleeps well.
I am not happy at this point to go down the medication route but if anyone has any information, helpful tips, etc. to give so I can help dd with the hyperactivity I would be really grateful. Have already tried EyeQ and dd went off the rails so that is not an option!
Thanks in advance Blossomhill

Have you looked on 'NetDoctor' website. I'm pretty sure there is a section on ADHD that is quite extensive and you might find helpful.

I'm not involved in ADHD at all but just recently worked on a study about ADHD - can't say anymore about it though cos it was a pharma company (the one that has launched atomexitine/Strattera).

Sorry, when I say I'm not involved I mean I don't know any children with it, but I do pharma research so am just aware of NetDoctor.

HTH.

Thanks skate, I'll look that up

Don't know if this would help, but we use hemp oil rather than fish oils. It's supposed to have ideal ratio of Omegas, and as i'm paranoid about toxins in fish it gets round that obstacle too.

zebra · 04/10/2004 11:35

Where do you buy hemp oil? I know my local health food shop won't have it (or Eskimo oil, for that matter).

beccaboo · 04/10/2004 11:46

I bought it in local health food shop - the brand we've got is Viridian, it's organic and cold pressed. You can order Eskimo 3 by post.

Saker · 04/10/2004 12:47

I get Eskimo oil from www.nutriworld.co.uk. I think they do plant omegas too.

happymumxxx · 04/10/2004 12:59

i get eskimo oil from a health shop called The Granary - not sure whether its just a merseyside health shop- not sure! Good luck anyway!

blossomhill · 04/10/2004 18:14

How should the eskimo oil work? Will it reduce the hyperactivity?

This site gives some info - sorry, useless at posting links so you might have to cut and paste.

You probably have done it already but what about modifying her diet?? - No E numbers or colours or anything that isn't fresh and organic???

Chocol8 · 05/10/2004 22:50

Ooh, thanks Saker, had a look at Nutriworld. They're out of Eskimo oil at the moment, but will try some of that to compare to EyeQ which seems to work with ds...well, it's not so much that it works but if I don't give it to him, all hell lets loose and he goes ape.

I reckon Twinkie made a good point about diet, Blossomhill - if you're not doing it already. Best of luck and if you find anything that does help, pleeeease let us know. x

Also try logging on the 'Hyper Active Child' website. A charity that's been going for years. Really useful info on diet and Omega supplements. Also, the British Association of Homeopaths has an article by Dr Marysia Kratimenos about treating ADHD with alternative 'medicines' - she is at the London Hospital of Homeopaths in Gt Ormand St. You can do a search from their article listing on-line or give them a call for them to send through some info via post. My ds2 is 5 and def hyper and finding school 'tricky' (they suspect he has ADHD symptons, no action taken yet though) He takes EYEQ every day which has def worked for him - took 8 weeks to kick in. Have just read "Is that my child?" by Dr Robin Pauc. He writes about dispelling the myths around ADHD, Dyslexia etc. Gives sensible advise about diet and getting the right dx. He does plug his own clinic rather alot, but it's a 'down to earth' read that helped me alot. Good luck!

My DS has a dx of autism but also had symptoms of dyspraxia and adhd. When we cut out white sugar there was a dramatic difference in his sleeping and attention. It's true about artificial colours and flavours and also msg, nitrates, bezoates etc. The human body wasn't meant to attempt to digest this cr*p, especially little bodies. Lots of kids with disabilities also have impaired detox abilities so are even more damaged by rubbish.
