celiac test and gluten free diet.

My son 2.4 ASD has been gluten free for about a month now. The paed ordered the most basic of tests and the nutritionist with a doctor has said that I should have had a celiac test before going Gluten free.. The doctor said I should give him little gluten everyday for a week or more then get him tested for the antibodies to show. This might sound thick but I didn't ask at the time -how much is a little bit? Should I give him a slice of bread or a spoonful of porridge? Ive no idea. Dont want to overdo it and undo the diet completely.

One of my DSs is a coeliac. We were told he had to stay on a completely "normal" diet prior to testing. (he had a blood test first then an endoscopy to confirm.) If they are not eating gluten the test is no good apparently. No idea how much you need to give him as you have already cut it out though.

I am a coeliac and agree with Tiggiwinkle - you need to stick to a completely normal diet or else the blood test and endoscopy could come back inconclusive. I started to feel better within a couple of weeks of being on a GF diet so the gut can respond quite quickly.

Every day that I give ds gluten he is becoming less responsive and squeezing my head more. I couldn't see that much difference when making ds gluten free except the tantrums but reversing it has made it so clear. The doctor said I should definitely have the test done to make sure, but now Im wavering. It doesn't feel right giving him gluten plus he is much harder to handle.

but aren't you doing the GF thing due to ASD/food intolerance/possible opiate effects of gluten, rather than because you think your DS might be a coeliac? I just wonder how relevant the coeliac blood test result would be.

coeliac test isn't necessarily the appropriate test re ASD/GFCF etc. There's no harm in doing it but usually the issues with ASD and gluten/cassein/soya etc are different. Also it is nothing to do with allergies. Gess knows all the technical stuff but you should check out the Sunderland Autism Research Unit, either Google or search MN. If you are doing tests though, I believe you do need your DS to be consuming gluten etc.

Yes I am total chaos but the dr said that to be careful we should check him for coeliacs. I dont think he is at all but the doctor said that if gluten is out of the system and then reintroduced to a coeliac it can produce a more allergic affect. So its just precautionary really to rule it out. That's why Im finding it difficult- it isn't absolutely necessary so Im ruining his diet just to be careful iyswim

Davros Have had those tests done already from Sunderland before I started the Gluten free diet.
