My dd has 2mg (when she needs it). I think that is about the average dose tbh

Am I just being really square but ...

You do not say how old/heavy your child is, therefore it impossible to ascertain if this is the correct dose for your child.

My DS has 1.5mg, my gfs dd has 3mg. Also different brands have different consistencies with active ingredients.

Also the first lot of this med was given to you by a freind you cannot ask this friend how much was in them?

jambuttie · 29/08/2007 17:44

my ds was on 3mg a night now on 6mg he is 3.5yrs

reiver · 29/08/2007 21:30

Are you using the liquid jambuttie? I was given a trial prescription of the 3mg dose for my dd. It was in the capsule form which I found hard to administer - had to open & mix with something. Liquid sounds an easier option. I had very patchy results so stopped but think I need to try again!

jambuttie · 29/08/2007 22:04

reiver my sons is also capsule form. I seperate it and mix it with a little milk for him which he drinks very easily

reiver · 30/08/2007 20:44

Thanks for reply jambuttie. I tried mixing the contents of a capsule with milk once but found it went rather granular/bitty which was no good as DD (still!) drinks from a bottle so thought it would clog up the teat. Does yours dissolve fully ? - it would make it easier if I could put it in her evening drink.

coppertop · 30/08/2007 21:52

Ds2 (4yrs) has one 3mg capsule.

Reiver - when the hospital pharmacy has it in stock they give us melatonin that dissolves. I mix it with a little bit of water then add it to ds2's milk. The capsules are more difficult to hide though and they're the ones we have at the moment. The instructions say to mix it with food but ds2 can usually taste it. It's worth trying to get the other kind if you can.

ds1 (8) was given 2.5mg capsules several years ago. They didn't work last time (couldn;t get them into him), but when he was hopping and skipping around the house at midnight last night I gave him half a capsule in orange juice. It clumped but I gave him a straw and he drank it. He fell asleep 20 minutes later. Tonight I did the same at 9.30- again alseep 20 mins later.

I need to track down the paed again.....

reiver · 31/08/2007 09:45

......me too gess as we've been doing the midnight thing too! Useful to know about the different versions so thanks RnB for useful post.

sorry to hi jack post but we got melatonin for ds about 6 weeks ago it worked great he was asleep 20 mins after having it but the problem was he was waking so early i mean 3 and 4 am so i stopped giving it him i decided i would rather have him running round his room till 11pm and getting up at 8 am than the other..

did anyone else have this problem????

dizzy34 · 04/09/2007 01:21

This never worked with my ds and we now use chloral hydrate. I dont think you can really overdose with this as its natural isnt it. Harry was about 3yrs old, 13kilos and we got up to 8 2mg capsules per night of the original melatonin (16mg) and then four of the long lasting ones. Didnt work.

The longer lasting ones might be better for those of you whose children are waking up early. The capsule contains beads which take a while to disolve in the tummy

ManxMum · 04/09/2007 20:52

Pharma Nord does not disolve and tastes foul,

PENN PHARMACEUTICAL SERVICES TREDEGAR GWENT NP22 3AA make one which does disolve and is palatable.

. Just to let you know it IS possible to get melatonon liquid!!!! it usualy takes a while to come so you have to order repeat prescriptions well in advance.

Its brand name is KIDNAPS

and it is made by

Just started ds (8) on melatonin capsules again. He only has 1mg but its enough to send him off. He was asleep at 9.45pm tonight, first time before 10.30 in months.

I mix the powder in with choc mousse.

shiny1 · 05/09/2007 14:51

melatonin and chloral hydrate dont work on my 13 yr old ,any suggestions?

Melaniec234 · 05/09/2007 16:25

Snap shiny, weve tried everything for 5yr old ds.

Chocol8 · 05/09/2007 20:51

My ds is 10 in a fortnight but has been on 9mg of melatonin for about 3 years now. It seems quite high compared to some others here...?

It's brilliant stuff but he still wakes up early.

ShinyHappySchmooo · 05/09/2007 20:59

Wow.. I came on SN to start a thread about Meltanonin.. and there was one right on top!

Have held off doing this.. not sure why.. but paediatrician offered it a few years ago and we said no.. didn't really like the thought of drugging him to sleep I suppose, if we could manage without.

But his sleep pattern is dire again. His usual waking at night pattern had settled to about 3 times a night.. now it's back up to 6 and it's been weeks now. We are like zombies. Being back at school may help but we if not, we have a paediatrician appointment coming up and throught we might ask for melatonin this time..

Would you guys recommend that we do?

He goes to bed about 7.. goes to sleep fairly soon.. but wakes on and off from about midnight onwards, waking for good between 5 and 6am.

Does it benefit the children too? (obviously if does us IF it works!) But do they benefit from getting more sleep? DS is clearly chronically exhausted (he falls alseep in cars within seconds!) and I think this exhaustion makes his horrible behavioural problems even more horrible! Is it good quality sleep that results if it works?
