Special School recommendations for East Yorkshire area for my Autisic 12 DS. My DS is currently in a small mainstream school with an enhanced special needs unit (10kids) . He is very challenging and volatile & is often violent. The school have been supportive but can no longer meet his needs & I need to find a suitable special school in my area? Can anyone recommend please?

I am sorry DS' placement is breaking down. I don't know if any of my suggestions will be suitable, but make sure you look at as many schools as you can. His behaviour may settle down with a placement that can meet his needs.

Cambian have a school in East Yorkshire, and depending on where you are there are a couple in North Yorkshire too that may be within travelling distance. Suitable travelling distance for secondary is usually considered up to 1hr15.

If residential may be an option you want or need to consider you could look at Witherslack and the Priory group schools. I think depending on where you are in East Yorks 1 or 2 of the Witherslack schools may be within travelling distance.

There's also Clervaux Garden School North Yorkshire, which is a new school, but I think it's too far unfortunately.

Thank you, that's really helpful I will have a look at the ones you mentioned.

I am also looking for a school in Yorkshire, would be very wary of the Cambrian group after reading a recent thread on here though. It is on the mainstream Education- SEN thread.

*Cambian

Perpetual, I saw that thread. I agree it is shocking. However, I think it highlights how important it is to view as many schools as possible, so you can work out what works and what does not, because I know parents with DC at other Cambian schools are happy with the provision. But equally I know parents who have, or had, DC at other indie SS where there have had unqualified incompetent staff. I think suitable provision is a high profile incident waiting to happen.

If Hull isn't too far Northcott may be an option?

freedom75 · 08/01/2020 18:56

Yes heard about northcott, I am East Riding council not hull council & everyone says its full but everywhere is full!

Being full on its own is not a good enough reason to refuse admittance. See IPSEA here

Hornswaggler · 08/01/2020 19:48

You're welcome, I think they do take from the East Riding too, I guess it would be dependent on how far out you are. Might be worth getting it touch with SENDIASS for advice if you've not already on 01482 467540. Good luck, I hope you find somewhere soon for your DS

Be careful with SENDIAS, they can provide brilliant support, but they are not completely independent, any service that gets LA funding will ultimately toe the party line.

Thank you! Wasn't aware of that!!
