Will an autism diagnosis make any difference now

Hi.

My DS has been in the system since he was 1 year old due to a lack of speech and slow to walk. He eventually got diagnosed with hyper mobile joints, glue ear and at around the age of 6 was diagnosed with Moderate Learning Difficulties. He only started to talk in sentences once he'd started school once he's ears had been sorted. He now almost 12 and at secondary school.

He has an EHC plan and we have a lot of support from the school.

However, a few weeks ago he's started saying that he doesn't know if he's done something (hit someone, wrote down a rude word etc). When questioned, it always points to the fact that he didn't as he has no details or what happened. He then checks through his day to check he hasn't done it. He used to do it a few years ago but it was a phase he grew out of. He's not coping all that well at school as he's over friendly and people tease him or make fun of him.

When he was at nursery, an Ed psych saw him flap his hands in excitement as a plane went passed and suggested an autism check. Two years later and I asked if we were having the check and it turned out that no one suggested it. However, the new Ed psych said they didn't think he did so they wouldn't re enter the paperwork. I'm unsure if he does or not. He certainly has some traits.

My question is, would you pursue it. Does it really matter what label he has if he's already accessing all the help.

I'd say it's worth pursuing if it helps you understand him more, as the more understanding you have the more able to are to help him. Also, if he is autistic, the knowledge will help him understand why he may struggle with certain things, which could help his self esteem and mental health.
So, I'd pursue it. When my son has his first full OT assessment we found out about his issues with proprioception, which I'd never even heard of before, and now it really helps us understand some of the things he has trouble with (and totally explains what he was like as a Velcro baby!).
