How do they take into account whether your child qualifies for them or not?

What on earth is a 'grey area', to whether they actually require nappies?

WTF is the assessment?

well we used to get free nappies in Staffs, so thought it would be the case here. I got in touch with the GP and HV as soon as we moved here, which was the end of April. They have questioned it for ages and I have lost count of how many forms we have filled in. Now the school nurse wants to assess her to see whether or not she 'needs' nappies. there is a ver 'grey area' apparently as to whether they think she needs them or not.

I am really upset about this. She cant be assessed until the end of october. I have asked the school whether she can be assessed there but apparently I have to be there for this to be done(??!) She gets through 3 nappies a night, I have to change sheets. I am very very angry about all this.

I get the feeling that just because she can walk they are not taking it so seriously. They appear to be very ignorant about my POV. Not only that they seem to be assuming that i am not even trying to potty train her, which is a lie. She is on a toileting program at school and they are having no success either

i am very mad Angry cxan you tell? i just dont know what to do about it all. i feel like I am hitting my head up a brick wall.

WTF! That is ridiculous. OF COURSE SHE NEEDS NAPPIES AND OF COURSE THEY SHOULD BE PROVIDED. Angry on your behalf too .

I really really don't understand some people's thinking. Why on earth would you be asking for free nappies unless your dd needed them? Its not like they can be used for anything/anyone else. And of course you would like her to be toilet trained.

Can they not understand that your dd has learning difficulties? that it is not the easiest thing in the world to toilet train any child and if she has limited understanding then it is going to be harder. And something like learning to walk is far less subtle in many ways than learning toilet training. That's why most kids learn to walk instinctively but have to be toilet trained i.e taught.

GRRRRRRRRRRRRR!

Do you think you could get the school to write a letter stating that they haven't had success so far with tt?

I am also totally bemused about how they are going to assess her.... just hope she pisses all over whoever is doing it .

I dont know HITC. i have already informed the school before. i dont want to be seen as a nag.

Actually on the form it sayd ds isnt trained, which he is now but not at night, maybe thats why there is all this fuss?

Fio - I am stunned. What planet are these idiots on?
Isn't hard enough having a child with special needs without all the hassle of fighting for everything you are entitled to? It wears you down doesn't it? I too am furious on your behalf and cannot believe they are going on about a 'grey area'. It is simple you either need them or you don't!!!!!!

heartinthecountry · 29/09/2004 10:23

Do you think they might think you are asking for the free nappies for ds? Surely they would be a different size? But it is not outside the realms of possibility that some small minded person somewhere might say 'oh I bet she is just using the nappies for her ds, her dd is 5 she can't possibly need them'.

Still utterly ridiculous though. And probably not that. Hope it gets sorted out when she is assessed.

I dont know HITC, you have planted that seed in my head and I actually think you are right!
