My DD3 has been reffered by her SALT to see the paeditrican due to her being highly distractable and having social behavour issues.

She has poor eye contact(Has squints in either eye as well)
No sense of danger at all
Hardly any recall(runs off when we are out)
Time out dosent work for her at all
Terrible speech a third of what she says is unclear.
Can play games with other children but when playing alone with small world toys becomes locked in the game and refuses to let anyone join in or chat to her.
She has also been on the action plus register for 12 months now.

How old is she? Do you think the SALT might be concerned with Autism, I ask as when my ds was small the paed he had was wondering whether he had Autism or Social Delay due to a really prem birth, I was talking to DS's SALT about this and she said that as SALTs she gets to see a lot of kids with varying degrees of Autism and if he was Autistic she would eat her hat. BTW ds has Social Delay.

I meant she said as a SALT all SALT's get to see lots of kids with varying degrees of Autism, I wanted to clarefy this point because that is how SHE put it.

She is 4 years old and due to start school in september. Her behaviour is extremely erratic and impulsive. Dont think its autism as she dosent have the classic signs. What exactly is social delay?

She also finds it hard to let go of ideas as well. For example took her swimming last week and she was utterly convinced that there was sharks in the water no matter what we saiid. She has nio control over the pitch and volume of her voice either.

Its hard to say, it could be something, it coyuld be nothing, does she play with other children often?, her poor eye contact could be down to her squint, has she attended a nursery, if so did the carers have any concerns?

Your list pretty much describes my ds2 at that age. He's dyspraxic. It was the SALT that diagnosed the verbal dyspraxia and Paed and Clinical Psych that diagnosed motor dyspraxia. The only thing that is different from what you describe is the not letting things go - he was then and still is very accepting of what I tell him. Never questioned anything which was strange in itself.

What has the SALT said about her speech?

dukester · 19/08/2007 09:06

She wears glasses ( full time)that pull her eyes into focus for her. She has also attened nursery for the past eighteen months and the staff are concerned with her speech and her behaviuor. She had an IEP and one to one time every day building up to small group work. She plays with children every day she has 2 big sisters and a younger brother who we think is autistic. But sometimes her behaviour is inappropiate her latest thing is lickin other kids to freak them out. The salt says she has a speech delay, imature sounds and thats about it really currently doing sound work learning to distingush between sounds. Get the impression the SALT finds her a handfull.
