Here are some suggested organisations that offer expert advice on special needs.

So ds1 has finally & entirely predictably put his head through the window

6 months after social services agreed that they needed to install secondary double glazing for safety purposes.

I am beyond pissed off. What is the sodding point in ageeing to do the work then not doing it. He is OK luckily- but trying to now break the other windows (with his head) as he thinks it's funny and he likes symmetry.

I wasn't going to drink tonight.

"Confirms the need" ! Jesus wept.
You must feel like smashing your own head through the window dealing with that level of bureaucratic lunacy day after day.
Poor you, glad ds is ok.

There's a book called "growing up severely autistic they call me gabriel". Social services agreed that something needed to be done to stop Gabriel climbing on the roof by the time they got round to it he had fallen through the roof (and landed in a neighbour's armchair!)

Confirms the need???? That's the most bonkers thing I've heard in a long time - so he has to smash a window with his head to 'confirm the need'..?

Reminds me though of when my brother and I were playing with a ball when we were about 7 and 10 and he was diving for the ball and flung his head through the bottom pane of glass in our kitchen door. My poor Mum was due to go on a weekend break that day and spent the morning showering bits of glass out of his head!

Not to mention when I walked through our glass front door when I was 4, with my toy pram. Apparently I thought the door was open...

gess · 20/08/2007 13:36

Ah the person who said about confirming the need is lovely though- I think she meant she would be using it as a way of trying to get it moved forwards. Our main problem now is ds1's loves of symmetry- he is desperate for the window on the other side to look the same

Ohh Gess, this must of been so scary for you all. I am so glad that DS didn't get seriously hurt.

I know just how scary the banging and headbutting of windows and the fear of the actually breaking can be, from first hand experience.

That is bad enough, I can't begin to imagine what it is like when it actually happens.

Fingers crossed that this is the kick up the arse that SS needs and they sort this out asap.

gess · 20/08/2007 14:51

I was slightly stressed on Saturday night Graciefer

I know Fio- the application form is the means checking bit apparently, although DFG's aren't means checked for under 16's.... so all seems rather pointless. Apparently they have to see our buildings insurance.

gess
Not read the entire thread so sorry if i'm repeating an old suggestion, but can you get hold of any of that clear plastic film that sticks on windows, it may make it a little safer while you wait for them to get their arse moving.

as I read through your messages I went from

to more and then at the pathetic response and then at the stupidity of 'confirming the need!! and visions of a young man falling through a roof and landing next to an old lady in her recliner - cup of tea going flying and all looking stunned.

Bloody Hell Gess! I am speechless. useless as a crotch in a nightie also sprang to mind.

ScummyMummy · 21/08/2007 11:23

How utterly crap, gess. And scary. Thank goodness the boy has taken no harm and has not ruined his (considerable, from the photos I've seen)beauty.

I know it's mean when she's nice, but I'd definitely keep badgering the OT and maybe even ask if she'd support you to complain? She may then badger the useless ones on your behalf.

gess · 21/08/2007 18:02

Well they've been, we've filled in the forms, it will be at least a few months before anything happens (so I'm reading between the lines and assuming 2008). They need quotes and approval adn to book a company. At least they've seen the damage, they did see to appreciate (unprompted) the potential horror story.

We have wondered on and off about the safety film. The reason I haven't bought it before is that I was concerned that it would change the view in some way- ie that it would look different- I have a feeling ds1 might go mad if it does. He is very very strong visually (today we went past a show home we visited 6 years ago when he was 2, he was heading up the garden path). However, I did say to dh the other day that we needed to get some now and at least try it.

mymatemax · 21/08/2007 20:20

some of that film has got a tint to it, i'm not sure if you can still buy the clear stuff - you may have to shop around a bit.
We have it on our windows at work - it doesn't distort the image but does make it look like its overcast.

Pixel · 21/08/2007 20:27

This stuff from mothercare looks quite clear. Perhaps you could just buy a small bit and stick it up somewhere to see if DS1 notices.

Joggeroo · 21/08/2007 22:29

We bought dome safety film from here . We have it on internal doors with glass and you wouldn't notice it's there. Expensive but I see you can get a discount for over 10m!! Comes with instructions that DH says you have to do to the letter which involves lots of soapy water from what I remember. He didn't buy their tool, just used the rubber blade thing he uses for cleaning the windows- Don't suppose SS would give you a little grant to get this sort of interim measure sorted?

gess · 22/08/2007 09:11

Thanks for the links. He'll definitely notice! The question is whether he'll mind I have 18 windows to do at the font! (Long narrow ones).

Gess - been a bit rubbish at MNetting these days so only just seen this. Did i miss it or do you now have the appt for the work to be done?

gess · 22/08/2007 11:09

no appointment yet, apparently they now need quotes, then a decision then blah de bah. I reckon it will be next year.

gess · 22/08/2007 11:25

It's a shame you don't live near to us (Brighton) or my dh could have done it for you. He used to do quite a few windows with that film stuff (well the one that looks like etched glass, he cut out the scrolly patterns) and did all the windows in our pub of which there were many! Most people thought it was real etched glass until told otherwise because he really got the knack of putting it on so you couldn't tell. Joggeroo is right, it does involve washing-up liquid! It lets you move the film around to get it into exactly the right place otherwise it would just stick as soon as it touched the glass and look all wrinkly. You can then smooth out all the liquid and air bubbles before it dries.

Btw, our Crelling waist-belt arrived this morning and thanks to your link on another thread I know I've got it fastened the right way . Ds isn't impressed though.
