fingar Nails and CP

As many of you know dd CP as far are we are aware it is only affecting her legs and possibly fine motor skills but time will tell with that.

The thing is we've always had real problems cutting dd's fingar nails and toes when ever i try n cut them she screms histerically and when i do actually cut them her fingar ends are red raw and it takes hours to calm her down again - now when ever the scissors go near her she screams bye bye to them.

Could this be realted to the cp???

I have mentioned this to the specialist but it alsways seems to get over looked of forgotten - and her nails are really getting long and she keep scratching and making marks on her self.

Anyone got any words of wisdom???

FD

Sorry fairydust I'm afraid I can't help on the CP front. Could you cut them when she's asleep? Used to do this when dd was tiny because was so afraid of hurting her.

misdee · 25/09/2004 22:44

dont now about the cp thing (mieow maybe does), but maybe try cutting her nails when she is asleep. how old is your dd now? could u persuade her to have a manicure and paint her nails after in a colour of her choice?

fairydust · 25/09/2004 22:45

she won't even let you hold her hand to go nearthe nails.

can't cut them when asleep as she is such a light sleeper

but thanks anyway

hi fairydust, we have the same problem, dd2's (age 3) nails grow long really quickly and she freaks out at the sight of the scissors. As she has eczema and scratches lots, it is a nightmare. I usually manage to only cut 1 nail a night, gradually we get there.....

misdee · 25/09/2004 22:56

have u tried clippers? or filing the nails down?

cab · 25/09/2004 22:58

It's got to be bribery and or distraction then fairydust! Maybe cut your own nails in front of her to get her used to it?

misdee · 25/09/2004 22:59

try after a bath.

i'm racking my brains about this one. my dds love having their nails cut which is good as they both have eczema and it has to be done, and they both have their nails really really short.

fairydust · 25/09/2004 23:02

I have tried all of these -baths everything i can't get near her nails without her going in to a hystical fit - and she gets really bad eczema

Mmm my dd (now 4) used to wave bye bye to her poos down the toilet - think she was really concerned she was flushing away a bit of herself. Think it improved once she saw other kids 'going'. Any friends locally who might be willing to cut their kids' fingernails in front of your dd to show her that it's ok really?
Sorry fairydust you've got me stumped on that one.

Dingle · 25/09/2004 23:16

After much trial & effort we now manage to keep dd's nails short by filing them. I found it impossible to cut or clip them as she does non keep still for long enough! We started by me filing everyone else's nails, and she eventually wanted to join in. Started with one nail at a time and it got better from there.I almost manage a whole hand now!
Now I have even seen dd trying to do her own nails with a lollystick![ah bless emoticon]
Good luck.

It could be she has Senory issues too, which are common with CP, she may simply not like you touching her hands, my DD is very touchy and loves stroking things but hates have her nails done, as does DS. I don't use nail chippers or sissors on DD1, I just hold her after a bath and peal the nail while its soft. Sorry can't be more help

fairydust · 26/09/2004 22:10

think i may try and press it a little more with the hosptial as with winter commnig the eczema gets worse.

thanks everyone.
