Schools in London for reading comprehension difficulties

Hi All - DS has been getting support for speech & language (SALT) in primary school for the last few years. He has belatedly been flagged in Y5 for ASD/ ADHD (undiagnosed and awaiting assessment for >1 yr), believe potentially on milder end of spectrum. He's been strong in Mental maths, spellings and phonics/ early reading but over the last few years highlighted significant reading comprehension challenges i.e. he reads text but does not understand. This is impacting his academic ability in English where he is lagging and also holding him back on excelling at Maths (e.g. word problems) which he is usually strong at.
While we are waiting for formal diagnosis, frustrated with the timing as need to decide on secondary schools pretty quickly. Also worried DS' motivation and confidence levels are getting impacted.
Would appreciate any inputs on

  1. Schools that support reading comprehension - I find a number of mainstream private options for dyslexia but not for this + also being open to ADHD (though it may be milder)
  2. Anyone who's dealt with reading comprehension challenge and pointers on how they improved this

Many Thanks!

Have you looked at specialist speech and language schools, like Moor House; depending on where you live?

@MontStMichel - given current SENCO's guidance on DS' symptoms being mild, we were keen on non specialist schools.
But More House looks interesting, though not clear on fees (as DS doesn;t have statement/EHCP) + location isn;t ideal (we live in Greenwich). However will give them a ring to see. Thank you!

My DD2 has ADD and practically no reading comprehension. She went through a mainstream comprehensive. I would not call no reading comprehension a mild difficulty! In her case, it never got any better - the impact got worse! I had to read all her text books for her, and spend 5 hours a night teaching her! She did a language at A level, beyond my knowledge - I had to read synopses in English and get the films of the books for her to watch. By A level, she was working from 6 am until midnight, with filter coffee to keep her going! She did get extra time in exams, to help her read the questions, which otherwise she misunderstood! Following instructions in science lessons was impossible for her - she also did a science A level!

Regardless of what the SENCO says, I would apply for an assessment for an EHC plan, because reading comprehension is fundamental at secondary; and if DC has ADHD; it can have a big impact on executive functioning!

Wow thanks @MontStMichel for sharing your experience and underlining seriousness of the challenge.
I can already see it's impacting DS' confidence and motivation as he is trying hard :(
I confess it is a bit disheartening to hear your exp that comprehension impact only got worse - baffling that there aren't improvement solutions/approaches?!

On EHC plan, we are still awaiting formal assessment of ADHD and ASD. Do we need to wait for that before we apply for EHCP?
