Irlen syndrome and overlays

Hi there,

I was hoping someone could clarify why some children with Irlen's have overlays and others don't? Is it based on the severity of their condition? I work in a setting where we print exercise books on their diagnosed colour, yet some prefer to work without an overlay for reading. Any clarification will be appreciated :)

Hi @HollyJC94 just bumping this for you so hopefully some Mumsnetters will be along soon with some helpful ideas. Flowers

I would think it would depend on the recommendations of the person who identified Irlens, plus what the parents want and what the child wants. My son has specialist glass that are tinted but some children wouldn't want to wear glasses. Some might not want to stand out as different, but might use overlays at home. Somewhere in the background it could be what is on a support plan and what is funded. My son had dyslexia tuition previously at school, because we fought for it and it was funded - there were definitely others with similar difficulties that didn't get it.

On the same subject my Ds is been assessed for it tomorrow . Do the school provide the overlays or I am expected to buy them . Not diagnosed yet but he fits completely
